Abstract:

Background Severe ovarian bleeding after transvaginal oocyte retrieval is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. A late-onset is common and may be associated with an increased risk for ovariectomy. In the present study we analyzed our cases of ovarian bleeding (OB) after oocyte retrieval and compared it with the published cases and studies, including 31 patients. Main outcome measures were how often it happens, risk factors, course, and findings during surgery. We could find that this complication occurs in 0.08% of the cases. The first sign of OB was evident in 33.3% within the first hours after retrieval, and in 93.3% within 24 hours. During surgery, a diffuse OB was found in 13.3%. In four patients, the ovary could not be preserved which was associated with longer time intervals between retrieval and the onset of symptoms as well as between retrieval and surgical intervention In conclusion, severe OB occurs in 0.08% after oocyte retrieval. Late-onset bleedings are common. A longer time interval between retrieval and surgical intervention might put a patient at risk for removing the ovary. MaterialsAndMethods N;Results N;Conclusion N;

Spondylodiscitis after transvaginal oocyte retrieval for in vitro fertilisation.

The frequency of iatrogenic spondylodiscitis is clearly increasing, which may reflect the increasing number of aggressive interventional procedures which may cause it. One of these is oocyte retrieval for in vitro fertilisation. The authors describe a case of Streptococcus faecalis L5-S1 spondylodiscitis. Conservative treatment is the rule, but surgery may be indicated in specific cases such as...

Early- and late-onset severe pneumonia after renal transplantation.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to clarify the distinctions in the clinical characteristics and outcomes between early- and late-onset severe pneumonia after renal transplantation requiring ICU admission. METHODS The data were retrospectively collected in consecutive renal recipients with severe pneumonia from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2013, in a tertiary ICU. We classified the pa...

Ureteral Injury with Delayed Massive Hematuria after Transvaginal Ultrasound-Guided Oocyte Retrieval

We report a case of ureteral injury with delayed hematuria after transvaginal oocyte retrieval. A 28-year-old infertile patient with a history of previous laparoscopic resection of endometriotic nodes of both sacrouterine ligaments presented with abdominal pain one day after oocyte retrieval. Four days after oocyte retrieval, she presented with massive hematuria that reappeared 6 days after ooc...

I-48: Ultrasound Deformable Model for Virtual Surgery Simulation of Oocyte Retrieval in Infertility Programs

Background The use of a medical simulator should enhance the goals of minimally invasive surgery: patient safety, cosmesis, shortening the length of hospital admissions, and reducing cost. Using an innovative approach to the handling of ultrasound images in virtual reality simulation, this article describes a process that employs a hybrid model of deformable models that can be applied in the te...

Severe Hemoperitoneum after Patient Self-Induced Fecal Evacuation

An increasing incidence of rectal injuries following patient self-induced harmful acts, aimed to sexual or laxatives porpouses, is a fact reported in literature (El-Ashaal et al., 2008). We herein report a case of severe hemoperitoneum related to a middle and upper rectal third seromuscolar tear caused by a self-induced fecal evacuation by means of an arrow with a covered cork tip. An urgent in...

Perioperative and post-operative complications of transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval: prospective study of >1000 oocyte retrievals.

BACKGROUND Although transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrievals (OR) are performed routinely worldwide, there is very little systematic data about its complications. METHODS We performed a prospective cohort study following the perioperative and post-operative complications of over 1058 ORs. Additionally, we assessed the pain experienced during the OR. RESULTS A total of 1166 OR were p...
