Effects of Satureja bachtiarica and Nigella sativa essential oils on the efficacy of lactococcosis vaccine in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Authors
Abstract:
Lactococcosis has been defined as acute septicaemia, which causes economic losses in farmed fish, especially in rainbow trout. This study was done to evaluate the effects of Satureja bachtiarica and Nigella sativa essential oils on the efficacy of lactococcosis vaccine in rainbow trout. A total number of 270 fishes with a mean average of 120 g were obtained; they were randomly divided into nine groups, each with three replicates, after two weeks of adaptation. The groups were: no injection, vaccine only, DMSO injection, vaccine with 50, 100, and 200 microgram ip injection. Two, four, and six weeks after vaccination, serological and haematological parameters were evaluated. At the sixth week, 1.7×107 cfu as LD50 96 hrs of Lactococcus garvieae were i.p injected and the relative survival percentage was calculated. The results indicated that N. sativa essence is effective on the leukocyte population as the highest number of leukocytes were found in fish receiving high concentration of N. sativa. The relative survival rate of the studied fish decreased with decreasing of the N. sativa essential oil concentration, with a significant difference with control groups (P

full textResearch Article: Adjuvant effect of Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) extract on the efficacy of lactococcosis vaccine in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
This study aimed to assess the adjuvant effect of Montanide ™ ISA 763 AVG and Licorice extract (Glycyrrhiza glabra) on the immune responses and disease resistance of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) immunized with Formalin inactivated whole cells of Lactococcus garvieae vaccine. Rainbow trout with an average initial weight of 72±3 g were randomLy divided into four experimental treatments: no...
full textRainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss
Rainbow trout are classified as Oncorhynchus mykiss, and as such belong to the same genus as Pacific salmon, and to the family Salmonidae, which includes Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), various trout (Salvelinus sp.), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) and whitefish (Coregonus sp.). Rainbow trout are native to areas around the North Pacific Ocean, from souther...
full textMolecular epidemiology of zoonotic streptococcosis/lactococcosis in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aquaculture in Iran
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Streptococcosis/lactococcosis is a hyperacute systemic disease that can occur in marine and fresh waters of many species of fish. The aim of this work was to study the disease outbreak in the major rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) production of Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS 108 Gram positive cocci isolates were obtained from diseased trout in seven provinces with ma...
full textThe essential oils of some medicinal plants on the immune system and growth of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Background & Aim: In present study, some of the Iranian endemic medicinal plants were used to evaluate potential as well as therapeutic agent and immunostimulants in aquaculture. The essential oils of five species from leaves and inflorescence were used to determinate the effects on immune system in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Experimental: The experimental in a comp...
full textEffects of dietary selenomethionine on larval rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
Increased selenium (Se) concentrations in water (>10 microg/L) have been measured in the San Diego Creek, which is a tributary of the Upper Newport Bay in Orange County, CA. The objective of this study was to develop tissue- and dietary-based thresholds for Se in resident fish species in San Diego Creek. A 90-day dietary experiment was conducted to determine the effects of seleno-L-methionine (...
