Abstract:

A hybrid longitudinal-torsional ultrasonic transducer is designed and fabricated in this research. The design of the transducer was performed using the FE method with ABAQUS software, with the aim of combining the longitudinal and torsional vibration modes. The transducer horn is then fabricated using a 4-axis milling machine. The PZT stacks are employed in order to excite the transducer. The transducer body is fabricated with grade 5 titanium for its appropriate mechanical properties. The transducer is then assembled and the experimental tests are carried out to measure the vibration amplitude in both longitudinal and torsional directions using an Eddy current displacement sensor. Theresults showed that the resonance frequencies of both the torsional and longitudinal modes are the same and experimental results are in good agreement with the FE results. The transducer can be used as a vibration tool for vibration assisted drilling which can produce both longitudinal and torsional vibrations.

Piezoceramic Element Design and Fabrication for Ultrasonic Transducer of Gas Meter

Ultrasonic transducers play a significant role in generating and receiving the acoustic waves in ultrasonic flowmeters. Depending on the required accuracy, the ultrasonic transducers can be installed either in one pair or more in an ultrasonic flowmeter. The main part of an ultrasonic transducer is its piezoceramic element. In this work, four piezoceramic elements with different diameter to thi...

Design of ultrasonic wedge transducer q

Cones and wedges inserted between an ultrasonic transducer and the specimen provide the transducer (circular or rectangular shape) with enhanced capability for point or line contact with the specimen. Such an arrangement is useful in that the transducer can be used for transmitting to and receiving from a point (or line) source, and that it can eliminate the undesirable aperture effect that mak...

Design of a Smart Ultrasonic Transducer for Interconnecting Machine Applications

A high-frequency ultrasonic transducer for copper or gold wire bonding has been designed, analyzed, prototyped and tested. Modeling techniques were used in the design phase and a practical design procedure was established and used. The transducer was decomposed into its elementary components. For each component, an initial design was obtained with simulations using a finite elements model (FEM)...

Design and Test of Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer

Currently, most capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers, adopting surface sacrificial technology encounter various problems such as difficult cavity etch, low controllability of membrane thickness etc., and their operating frequencies are more concentrated in several MHz bandwidths that cannot meet the requirements of long-distance imaging applications. In order to solve these problems,...

Design and fabrication of an ultrasonic thermoacoustic generator using metal nanocoatings (Research Article)

In this paper, we design, simulate, and build an ultrasonic heat generator. In thermoacoustics, heat generated by the passage of alternating current through a thin conductor produces a sound wave. In this method, unlike other methods of sound production, moving parts are not used to vibrate air molecules, and as a result, the frequency response of these generators is flatter than other sound ge...
