Correlational studies on insulin resistance and leptin gene polymorphisms in peritoneal dialysis patients
Authors
Abstract:
Objective(s):The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between insulin resistance (IR) and leptin (LEP) gene polymorphisms in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Materials and Methods: From July 1, 2011 to August 1, 2011, patients who received chronic PD were chosen and divided into three groups (DM, high HOMR-IR, and low HOMR-IR). Two PCR products of LEP were sequenced and aligned and the distribution of polymorphisms was analyzed using χ2 analysis. In addition, serum leptin level, PD conditions, and biochemical parameters according to different genotype of G-2548A and A19G were statistically analyzed (P-value

full textLeptin elimination in hyperleptinaemic peritoneal dialysis patients.
BACKGROUND Elevated plasma concentrations of leptin, a hormone thought to regulate body composition by influencing food intake/metabolic rate, are prevalent in renal failure patients. The mechanism for these increases is not known, but evidence suggests that simple accumulation due to decreased elimination is insufficient explanation. METHODS We studied the incidence of hyperleptinaemia in 28...
full textComparison of Marital Satisfaction in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients
Alternative kidney treatments, including renal transplantation, hemodialysis (HD), and peritoneal dialysis (PD), are administered when severe kidney failure occurs and the kidney can no longer function. The present study compares different dimensions of marital satisfaction in HD and PD patients so as to assist physicians and patients in choosing their appropriate treatment. This cross-se...
full textGlucose and Insulin Response to Peritoneal Dialysis Fluid in Diabetic and Nondiabetic Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.
A postprandial increase in blood glucose in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with diabetes was observed in our previous study using continuous blood glucose monitoring. The response was observed in diabetic but not in nondiabetic PD patients. In addition, the response was reduced when patients used icodextrin; glucose absorbed from the peritoneum was responsible for the postprandial increase i...
full textErythropoietin resistance in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
Anemia is one of the most serious complications in patients on dialysis. Erythropoietin improves the anemia. However, erythropoietin resistance is sometimes encountered from causes such as functional iron deficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism, blood loss, or interaction with other drugs. To clarify the interaction between erythropoietin and the renin-angiotensin system, we studied the maint...
