Abstract:

Crystallographic data analyses indicate that three types of prolinium cations, along with two types of hydrogen bonding, produce and stabilize the helical structure of triprolinium 12-phosphomolybdate. There are similarities between this organic-inorganic compound and peptides/proteins. The stronger “conventional” hydrogen bonds and the less common C-H…O attractions play critical roles in generating and stabilizing the DNA-like network.

Ionic Equilibria in Protic and in Dipolar Aprotic Solvents

Chemical interactions' as well as 'physical interactions' play an important part in solvation. Some equilibria are reversed on transfer froni protic to dipolar aprotic solvents and this behaviour can be interpreted and predicted through the solvent activity coefficients of the appropriate solutes. Some extrathermodynamic assumptions for the evaluation of single ion solvent activity coefficients...

Salicylaldimine Ruthenium Alkylidene Complexes: Metathesis Catalysts Tuned for Protic Solvents.

Tuning the electronic and steric environment of olefin metathesis catalysts with specialized ligands can adapt them to broader applications, including metathesis in aqueous solvents. Bidentate salicylaldimine ligands are known to stabilize ruthenium alkylidene complexes, as well as allow ring-closing metathesis in protic media. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of exceptionally...

Unusually slow proton transfer dynamics of a 3-hydroxychromone dye in protic solvents.

The photophysics of a 3-hydroxychromone dye, 2-(2-furyl)-3-hydroxychromone (FHC) was explored in different types of protic solvents by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. FHC exhibits a dual emission, attributable to the excited normal (N*) and tautomer (T*) forms resulting from an excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction (N*-->T*). The ESIPT rate decr...

Solvent tuned single molecule dual emission in protic solvents: effect of polarity and H-bonding.

Phen-PENMe2 has recently been proposed as a promising new molecule displaying solvent-tuned dual emission, highlighting an original and newly-described charge transfer model. The study of the photophysical behaviour of this molecule was extended to include protic solvents. The effects of polarity and hydrogen bonding lead to an even more evident dual emission associated with a large multi-emiss...

Intermolecular photoinduced electron-transfer of 1,8-naphthalimides in protic polar solvents.

The intermolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) processes of 1,8-naphthalimide (NI) derivatives including NI-linker-phenothiazine dyads were investigated in a protic H(2)O/CH(3)CN (v/v=1:1) solvent using ns-laser flash photolysis with 355 nm-laser excitation. NI derivatives are surrounded by H(2)O in the ground state in H(2)O/CH(3)CN. The T(1)-T(n) absorption band of (3)NI* was observed...

Optical basicity scales in protic solvents: water, hydrogen fluoride, ammonia and their mixtures.

In an inorganic material, a measure of the Lewis basicity of a solvent is commonly provided by the optical basicity, i.e. the ability of the solvent molecules to donate their electrons to an acidic species. This quantity is known to vary with the polarizability of the Lewis base. In protic solvents, the Lewis definition of basicity is barely used; it is replaced by the more purpose-built Brønst...
