zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in shiraz, southern iran: a molecular, isoenzyme and morphologic approach

چکیده
background: cutaneous leishmaniasis (cl) with diverse clinical manifestations is prevalent and remains a major public health problem in iran and its incidence has been doubled over the last decade. the present study is about the potential role of rodents in the epidemiology of cl in kharameh district in shiraz, southern iran. methods: from april 2004 to april 2005, a total of sixteen rodents were collected in live traps from the endemic area of cl in kharameh district in shiraz. evans medium was used for culture. specific polymerase chain reaction and isoenzyme electrophoresis methods were performed to characterize the parasite. results: the rodent species were tatera indica . three samples from tatera indica were found positive (2 males and 1 female in kafdehak and sejel-abad villages) for l. major . macrophages in the bone marrow of femoral bone were infected with the amastigote form of the parasite. conclusions: it seems that t. indica is the reservoir host for cl in kharameh (a district in shiraz, southern iran). it was shown that the bone marrow of the rodents is the tissue of choice for light and ultrastructural studies of l. major .

متن کاملRodent control operations against zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in rural Iran.
BACKGROUND Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is a serious and increasing public health problem in many rural areas of Iran. Previous studies showed that rodent control operations are effective in destroying rodents and reducing the incidence of ZCL on a small scale and in special circumstances. The objective of this study was to determine suitable timing for rodent control operations in re...
متن کاملZoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Afghanistan
To the Editor: Recent reports from Afghanistan have focused on the current status of war-and refugee-related anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL), caused by Leishmania tropica, in Kabul City, refugee camps, and Fayzabad City (Badakhshan Province) (1–4). In central Asia, ACL is transmitted mainly by the sandfly Phlebotomus sergenti in urban or peri-urban environments (5). Zoonotic cutaneo...
متن کاملBacterial superinfection in Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis
BACKGROUND Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) is a polymorphic disease. It is generally accepted that bacterial superinfection may play a role in the clinical appearance of the lesions and may delay or prevent the healing process. However, the pattern of bacterial pathogens involved has rarely been investigated. MATERIAL/METHODS The aim of this study was to identify the bacterial species ...
متن کاملMolecular variation in Leishmania parasites from sandflies species of a zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in northeast of Iran.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES In the well-known zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) focus in Turkmen Sahara, border of Iran and Turkmenistan, ZCL has increased among humans in the past five years. The present study was undertaken to incriminate vectors of ZCL in the region, and to find molecular variation in Leishmania parasites. METHODS The sandflies were sampled using CDC light-traps and stick...
متن کاملDynamic Relations between Incidence of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis and Climatic Factors in Golestan Province, Iran
BACKGROUND Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL), an important public health problem in Iran, is sensitive to climate conditions. This study aimed to examine dynamic relations between the climate factors and incidence of ZCL in Golestan Province, northern Iran during 2010-2012. METHODS Data of monthly climatic factors, including temperature variables, relative humidity variables, evaporation...
