Yersinia enterocolitica and related Yersinia species share many temperature-dependent biological attributes. The present report documents temperature-dependent production of a bacteriocin-like substance only among Yersinia strains which ferment L-rhamnose, raffinose, and melibiose and which have been tentatively designed Y. intermedia. When tested by the "lawn-spotting" technique at 25 and 37 d...
The species Yersinia intermedia is a member of the genus Yersinia which belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. This species is divided into eight biotypes, according to Brenner's biotyping scheme. This scheme relies on five tests (utilization of Simmons citrate and acid production from d-melibiose, d-raffinose, alpha-methyl-d-glucoside [alphaMG], and l-rhamnose). The collection of the French...
Background:Yersinia is a genus in the family Enterobacteriaceae that its species includeYersinia enterocolitica, Yersinia intermedia, Yersinia frederiksenii, and Yersinia kristensenii. Among these species, Yersinia enterocolitica is the most important one that causes various diseases such as gastroenteritis, mesenteric lymph...
Yersinia enterocolitica-like strains are usually understudied. In this work, we reported the draft genome sequences of two Yersinia frederiksenii, two Yersinia intermedia, and two Yersinia kristensenii strains isolated from humans, animals, food, and the environment in Brazil. These draft genomes will provide better molecular characterizations of these species.
A prospective study was performed to assess the effectiveness of the API 20E in the identification of 183 Yersinia isolates incubated at 28 degrees C for 18 to 24 h. The results showed an overall correct-identification rate of 90%, with positive predictive values for Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia frederiksenii of 94 and 92%, respectively. Yersinia intermedia results were unacceptable.
API 20E strip test, the standard for Enterobacteriaceae identification, is not sufficient to discriminate some Yersinia species for some unstable biochemical reactions and the same biochemical profile presented in some species, e.g. Yersinia ferderiksenii and Yersinia intermedia, which need a variety of molecular biology methods as auxiliaries for identification. The 16S rRNA gene is considered...
Five Yersinia strains, biochemically mimicking Yersinia intermedia, were isolated from patients with acute diarrheal diseases seen at the University of Lagos (Nigeria) Teaching Hospital between October 1979 and September 1982. The five isolates utilized citrate as their source of carbon and fermented sucrose, L-rhamnose, and alpha-methyl-D-glucoside, but unlike any other Y. intermedia biogroup,...
In this case-control study of Yersinia enterocolitica infections among black infants, chitterling preparation was significantly associated with illness (p<0.001). Of 13 samples of chitterlings tested, 2 were positive for Yersinia intermedia and 5 for Salmonella. Decontamination of chitterlings before sale with methods such as irradiation should be strongly considered.
Yersinia spp. were isolated from 34 of 500 birds representing nine species. The highest isolation rate, 5 of 21 (23.8%), was found in blue magpies (Cyanopia cyanus), followed by pheasants (Phasianus colchicus tohkaidi), 5 of 33 (15.2%); gray starlings (Sturnus cineraceus), 6 of 57 (10.5%); tree sparrows (Passer montanus), 1 of 14 (7.1%); bulbuls (Hypsipetes amaurotis), 4 of 57 (7.0%); crows (Co...
The antigenic scheme of Wauters and co-workers was applied to serotype a total of 585 strains of Yersinia enterocolitica, 43 strains of Yersinia kristensenii, 40 strains of Yersinia frederiksenii, and 25 strains of Yersinia intermedia. The O antigens 11,23; 11,24; 12,25; 12,26; and 28 were exclusively associated with Y. kristensenii. O antigen 16 was associated with Y. kristensenii and Y. frede...
