Cross sectional echocardiography identified vegetations in 45 of 62 (73%) patients who had clinical evidence of active infective endocarditis. The sensitivity of this technique in diagnosing vegetations in infective endocarditis was 93% and the specificity 89%. The predictive value of a positive test was 96% and that of a negative test 80%. Vegetations were detected with a similar frequency on ...

The case reports of 186 intravenous drug abusers admitted over a three year period were studied. Nineteen had proven staphylococcal septicaemia. Echocardiography showed tricuspid vegetations in seven and aortic vegetations in two. Eighteen out of 19 had systolic murmurs, but only the two patients with aortic vegetations had diastolic murmurs. The chest x ray showed opacities in 10 patients (all...

Drugs that localize in valvular vegetations may be useful in the diagnosis and treatment of infective endocarditis. We therefore tested the hypothesis that parenterally injected hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD), which is concentrated in tumors and atherosclerotic plaques, localizes in the vegetations of experimental infective endocarditis. In 14 rabbits, various bacteria were given intra-arteri...

background infective endocarditis is one of the most important complications of injection drug use, which is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of vegetation size and localization on outcome and in-hospital mortality of infective endocarditis. patients and methods a total of 34 patients were admitted to a university hospital ...

1 of 2 DESCRIPTION A 40-year-old lady was admitted with a week’s history of fever and dyspnoea. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed 0.5 × 0.5 cm vegetation on the posterior mitral leafl et with a severe eccentric mitral regurgitation (MR) hugging the left atrial aspect of anterior mitral leafl et and the interatrial septum (IAS) which was confi rmed by a transoesophageal echocardiogram ( fi...

The present report is the first description to our knowledge of a clinical case of bacterial calcification in human infective endocarditic vegetations. Partial calcification of bacteria within vegetations may be a further mechanism of bacterial protection from host defences and antibiotics. Similar calcification has recently been reported in vegetations formed on porcine valvular prostheses imp...

AIMS Infective endocarditis is a serious disease with diverse clinical manifestations. The aim of this work was to analyse vegetations' size in relation to the clinical presentation, course of the disease, and the type of the microorganism. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 146 patients with definite diagnosis of infective endocarditis were identified at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center during the y...

Two cases of infective endocarditis with vegetations attached to the mitral and tricuspid annuli are described. In both cases, the vegetations could not be identified by transthoracic echocardiography. These cases illustrate the advantage of TEE over the transthoracic approach in recognizing vegetations in extravalvular locations.

OBJECTIVE To compare transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography (TTE, TOE) in patients with permanent pacemaker lead infection and to evaluate the safety of medical extraction in cases of large vegetations. METHODS TTE and TOE were performed in 23 patients with definite pacemaker lead infection. Seventeen patients without previous infection served as a TOE reference for non-infected ...
