This work reports the synthesis and characterization of the first water-soluble iridium porphyrin, iridium(iii) diaqua porphyrin [Ir(III)(TSPP)(OH(2))(2)](3-) (1, TSPP = tetra-p-sulfonatophenyl porphyrin).
