Tephrosia purpurea has been reported to possess antidiabetic activity, however, its effects on cardiovascular complications and cataract associated with diabetes have not been studied. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of aqueous extract of Tephrosia purpurea on cardiovascular complications and cataract associated with streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats. Spr...
Tephrosia purpurea, (Syn: Galega purpurea, Linn.; Family: Fabaceae) is locally known as Bansa (Punjabi), Sarphunka (Hindi) and Jangli kulthi (Sindhi). It grows wild throughout Indo-Pak-Bangla Desh subcontinent on hard and stony grounds (1-3). It is branched and sub-erect herbaceous perennial plant. The plants are propagated through seeds (4, 5). Phytochemical investigations revealed the presenc...
Tephrosia purpurea is a species of flowering plant in the pea family, Fabaceae, which has a pantropical distribution. According to Ayurveda, the plant is anthelmintic, alexiteric, restorative, and antipyretic; it is used in the treatment of leprosy, ulcers, asthma, and tumors, as well as diseases of the liver, spleen, heart, and blood. A decoction of the roots is given in dyspepsia, diarrhea, r...
The naturally occurring allilochemics play a promising role in insect control by deterring insect feeding by their effects as insect growth regulators, as antihormones or as insecticides. Effect of Tephrosia purpurea extracts on reproductive ability i.e. fecundity was reduced at more than 40.08 %. There is reduction in hatching percentage also. It may be due to reduced juvenile hormone titre wh...
Tephrosia purpurea is a copiously branched herbaceous perennial plant distributed throughout the tropics which is used in the treatment of bronchitis, diuretic, pimples, tonic, laxative, cough, and tumour. The present study is an attempt to explore the anthelmintic activity of aqueous and methanolic extract of leaves of plant Tephrosia purpurea . The various concentrations of aqueous and methan...
Observations on Tephrosia purpurea (L.) pers. Which is known as Sarapunkha in Ayurveda, growing in and around Gauhati (Assam) has been systematically discussed in this paper. The Ethno-botanical records of the plant are also described here.
Chemical investigations of aerial parts of Tephrosia purpurea yielded the rare prenylated flavonoids, tephropurpulin A (1) and isoglabratephrin (2), in addition to a previously identified flavonoid, glabratephrin (3). Structures were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, as well as by HR-MS analysis; for compounds 2 and 3, structures were confirmed by X-ray analysis.
The ethanolic extract of the root of Tephrosia purpurea was screened for in vitro antioxidant properties using standard procedures. The ethanolic extract exhibited IC(50) values of 132.31±8.79 and 405.22±15.09 respectively in DPPH and nitric acid radical inhibition assay. These values were slightly more than those obtained for ascorbic acid and rutin used as standard. The findings justify the t...
In Egypt, the seed and pollen grain morphology of genus Tephrosia Pers. were studied using light scanning electron microscopy. Qualitative quantitative characters seeds grains are presented. The data suggest that several morphological can distinguish taxa Tephrosia. Based on UPGMA clustering analysis PCA, three main clades recognized: Clade A comprising T. kassasii, clade B apollinea, purpurea,...
