BACKGROUND Temephos in domestic water containers remains a mainstay of Latin American government programmes for control of Aedes aegypti and associated illnesses, including dengue. There is little published evidence about coverage of routine temephos programmes. A cluster randomised controlled trial of community mobilisation in Mexico and Nicaragua reduced vector indices, dengue infection, and ...

The application of the organophosphate larvicide temephos to water storage containers is one of the most commonly employed dengue vector control methods. This systematic literature review is to the knowledge of the authors the first that aims to assess the community-effectiveness of temephos in controlling both vectors and dengue transmission when delivered either as a single intervention or in...

Residual effectiveness of plaster matrix formulations of temephos and temephos plus an emulsifier (Atlox 3409F) were evaluated against Aedes aegypti larvae during an 8-wk period. Formulations of 2% and 5% (AI) Atlox with 5% (AI) temephos yielded 100% larval mortality for 8 wk. A 5% temephos formulation without the addition of the emulsifier produced 100% larval mortality through only 1 wk.

BACKGROUND A cluster-randomized controlled trial of community mobilisation for dengue prevention in Mexico and Nicaragua reported, as a secondary finding, a higher risk of dengue virus infection in households where inspectors found temephos in water containers. Data from control sites in the preceding pilot study and the Nicaragua trial arm provided six time points (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011, 2...

The diagnostic dose for temephos susceptibility test was established based on Aedes aegypti, the susceptible Bora (French Polynesia) strain, for practical and routine use. The diagnostic dose was subsequently used to evaluate the susceptibility/resistance status in F1 progenies of field-collected samples from Bangkok and various parts of Thailand. It appeared that Ae. aegypti mosquitoes of one ...

In Brazil, decades of dengue vector control using organophosphates and pyrethroids have led to dissemination of resistance. Although these insecticides have been employed for decades against Aedes aegypti in the country, knowledge of the impact of temephos resistance on vector viability is limited. We evaluated several fitness parameters in two Brazilian Ae. aegypti populations, both classified...

INTRODUCTION The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the principal vector of dengue and yellow fever flaviviruses. Temephos is an organophosphate insecticide used globally to suppress Ae. aegypti larval populations but resistance has evolved in many locations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) controlling temephos survival in Ae. aegypti larvae were mapped in a pair of F3 adv...

The organophosphate temephos has been the main insecticide used against larvae of the dengue and yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) in Brazil since the mid-1980s. Reports of resistance date back to 1995; however, no systematic reports of widespread temephos resistance have occurred to date. As resistance investigation is paramount for strategic decision-making by health officials, our object...

Aedes aegypti, at the larval stage, has been subjected to the temephos selection in laboratory. The level of temephos resistance was detected in a microplate by biochemical assay using WHO bioassay technique. The major enzyme-based resistance mechanisms involved in temephos resistance include elevated nonspecific esterase, oxidase and insensitive acetylcholinesterase. After 19 generations of te...
