The term ‘behavior’ is used ubiquitously in engineering. It refers roughly to the way technical artifacts ‘behave’ in a given or hypothetical situation, and plays a pivotal role in specific design methodologies since it allows connecting descriptions of the physical structure of technical artifacts to descriptions of their technical functions. However, behavior does not have a precise meaning: ...

We consider graphs that admit polyline drawings where all crossings occur at the same angle α ∈ (0, π2 ]. We prove that every graph on n vertices that admits such a polyline drawing with at most two bends per edge has O(n) edges. This result remains true when each crossing occurs at an angle from a small set of angles. We also provide several extensions that might be of independent interest.

Generative educational assessments such as essays or drawings allow students to express their ideas. They provide more insight into student knowledge than most multiplechoice items. Formative guidance on generative items can help students engage deeply with material by encouraging students to effectively revise their work. Generative items promote scientific inquiry by eliciting a variety of re...

In this paper, we present boundary labeling, a new approach for labeling point sets with large labels. We first place disjoint labels around an axis-parallel rectangle that contains the points. Then we connect each label to its point such that no two connections intersect. Such an approach is common e.g. in technical drawings and medical atlases, but so far the problem has not been studied in t...

Reading a book is also kind of better solution when you have no enough money or time to get your own adventure. This is one of the reasons we show the machine interpretation of line drawing images technical drawings maps and diagrams as your friend in spending the time. For more representative collections, this book not only offers it's strategically book resource. It can be a good friend, real...

We linked names and contact information to publicly available profiles in the Personal Genome Project. These profiles contain medical and genomic information, including details about medications, procedures and diseases, and demographic information, such as date of birth, gender, and postal code. By linking demographics to public records such as voter lists, and mining for names hidden in attac...

Society depends on engineers to produce sound structures and innovative technologies. Engineering education adequately prepares them to do this by focusing on technical design considerations. However, this is only part of what should be required of the profession. Indeed, as the authors of this book, Daniel Vallero and P. Aarne Vesilind, note, ‘‘no project is complete unless matters of justice ...

Let me begin by drawing a basic distinction between ordinary and technical senses of words. By the ordinary sense of a word I mean the sense we learned on our mothers’ knees, the sense intended and understood by competent English speakers using the word in everyday contexts. By a technical sense I mean a deliberate variation on the ordinary sense introduced to serve a particular theoretical or ...
