Tailgut cysts are congenital lesions found in the presacral space. These have been mainly identified in adults and are rare in children, especially neonates. Here, we present the case of a neonate with a presacral cystic mass detected by prenatal ultrasonography that was diagnosed as a tailgut cyst after postnatal surgical removal. When a presacral cyst is encountered, tailgut cyst should be co...
Tailgut cysts are rare congenital lesions that arise from the failure of regression of the embryological tailgut. We report a case of neoplastic transformation of tailgut cyst to carcinoid tumor which is exceedingly uncommon.
Tailgut cysts, or retrorectal cystic hamartomas, are rare congenital developmental lesions, most commonly located in the retrorectal space, and are more common in women. We present a case of retrorectal tailgut cyst managed using a laparoscopic approach. A 36-year-old woman presented with incidentally detected retrorectal tumors during evaluation for a gallbladder polyp. Her past medical histor...
Tailgut cysts are rare developmental cysts. Surgery has been the primary method of diagnosis and treatment of these cysts, but endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has recently been used to establish diagnosis. Only 2 cases of tailgut cyst diagnosed by EUS-guided FNA have been reported. We present a woman in her fourth decade who presented for evaluation of perirectal mass. EUS-guided fine-needle aspira...
Tailgut cyst, or retrorectal cystic hamartoma, is a rare congenital lesion found in the presacral space. The lession has been infrequently reported in medical literature. It is most common in middle-aged women and is rare in children. We report a case of a tailgut cyst mimicking a rectal duplication in an 8-year-old child. Excision and histological examination of the mass confirmed the tailgut ...
BACKGROUND Retrorectal hamartoma, also known as tailgut cyst, is a rare tumor that arises from remnants of the embryonic postanal gut. The tumor occurs in the retrorectal space and may undergo malignant degeneration. METHODS The clinical information on a single patient with pseudomyxoma peritonei associated with a tailgut cyst was reviewed and a literature review of the subject performed. R...
Retrorectal lesions are rare entities. We report the complete clinicopathological details of an unusual retrorectal lesion composed of low-grade endometrioid adenocarcinoma and propose that this is a malignant change in pluripotent cells arising within a long-standing retrorectal tailgut lesion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of this malignancy in a retrorectal tail...
The authors describe a case in which a tailgut cyst occurred at an unusual location in a 22-year-old woman referred for abdominal discomfort and urinary frequency. The left abdomen contained a palpable mass, found at imaging studies to be a homogeneous, unilocular and cystic, and anterior to the left kidney. After surgical excision, it was shown to be a tailgut cyst.
Tailgut cysts are uncommon developmental cysts that form in the presacral space. Complications of tailgut cysts include benign reactive lesions associated with infection and inflammation, and malignant transformation. Six cases of carcinoid tumor arising in tailgut cysts have been reported in the medical literature to date. Here we report another case of carcinoid tumor arising in a tailgut cys...
Retro-rectal cystic hamartoma (tailgut cyst), is an uncommon congenital developmental lesion, generally located in the retro-rectal space. Its diagnosis and approach is challenging because the retropelvic space is not familiar. We report a 51-year-old woman who presented with paresthesia and pain in perianal area. The magnetic resonance image showed high signal intensity on the T1-weighted imag...
