For porcine myocardium, ultrasonic regional deformation parameters, systolic strain (epsilon(sys)) and peak systolic strain rate (SR(sys)), were compared with stroke volume (SV) and contractility [contractility index (CI)] measured as the ratio of end-systolic strain to end-systolic wall stress. Heart rate (HR) and contractility were varied by atrial pacing (AP = 120-180 beats/min, n = 7), incr...

CONTEXT As the science and practice of syndromic surveillance (SyS) evolve, it has increasing utility for public health surveillance at the local level. Local health departments (LHDs) require specific organizational and workforce capabilities to use SyS data. In 2013, more than half of the LHDs reported using SyS, although little has been reported about LHD workforce capabilities in SyS. OBJ...

-Catenins are conserved regulators of metazoan development that function with TCF DNA-binding proteins to activate transcription. In Caenorhabditis elegans, SYS-1/ -catenin and POP-1/TCF regulate several asymmetric divisions, including that of the somatic gonadal precursor cell (SGP). In the distal but not the proximal SGP daughter, SYS-1/ -catenin and POP-1/TCF transcriptionally activate ceh-2...

The extreme anoxia-tolerance of freshwater turtles under cold conditions is well documented, but little is known about their cardiac performance in such situations. Using chronic catheterization techniques, we measured systemic cardiac power output (PO(sys)), systemic cardiac output (Q(.)(sys)), heart rate (fh), systemic stroke volume (V(s,sys)), systemic resistance (R(sys)) and mean arterial p...

Caenorhabditis elegans embryos rapidly diversify cell fate using a modified Wnt/β-catenin signaling strategy to carry out serial asymmetric cell divisions (ACDs). Wnt-dependent ACDs rely on nuclear asymmetry of the transcriptional coactivator SYS-1/β-catenin between daughter cells to differentially activate Wnt-responsive target genes. Here, we investigate how dynamic localization of SYS-1 to m...

BACKGROUND In a correlative functional/histopathologic study, we investigated the regional deformation characteristics of both chronic nontransmural and transmural infarctions before and after a dobutamine challenge. METHODS AND RESULTS After stenosing copper-coated stent implantation to produce circumflex artery endothelial proliferation, 18 pigs were followed up for 5 weeks. Posteuthanasia ...

To form the proximal-distal axis of the C. elegans gonad, two somatic gonadal precursor cells, Z1 and Z4, divide asymmetrically to generate one daughter with a proximal fate and one with a distal fate. Genes governing this process include the lin-17 frizzled receptor, wrm-1/beta-catenin, the pop-1/TCF transcription factor, lit-1/nemo-like kinase, and the sys-1 gene. Normally, all of these regul...

This paper proposes a novel interactive technique, the Eye-Catcher, which helps photographers capture a variety of natural looking facial expressions of their subjects, by keeping the eyes of the subjects focused on the camera without the stress usually associated with being photographed. We develop a prototype system and verify the effectiveness through evaluation and discussion.
