We undertook a prospective ultrasound study of subependymal cyst formation in normal neonates. Twenty five of 500 normal Chinese neonates (5%) were found to have subependymal cysts. Most of these (18 of 25) showed no obvious perinatal insult. This study suggests a rather high incidence of concealed intrauterine subependymal haemorrhage in normal term neonates.

Serial neurosonography was performed in 210 high-risk, preterm neonates. Eleven (5.8%) demonstrated small cystic formations in the subependymal lining of the lateral ventricles. These subependymal cysts were unilateral and were detected at the exact site of a previous subependymal hemorrhage in two cases. These 11 infants were not significantly different in maturity, size, or clinical parameter...

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe the clinical data and sonographic evolution of subependymal cysts (SEC) and to compare alone SEC versus SEC combined with other brain abnormalities. METHODS The diagnosis of SEC relied on the discovery of one/several cysts at the outer angle of one/both lateral ventricles detected by routine brain ultrasound tests in the first days of life. Duri...

Hydrocephalic patients with shunt infections frequently develop multiple cerebrospinal-fluid-density cysts that cause midline shift and life-threatening intracranial hypertension and respond poorly, if at all, to shunt diversion of cerebrospinal fluid. These cysts have been considered to represent multiloculation of the ventricular system by ependymal adhesions and veils resulting from ventricu...
