Spondylodiscitis caused by Fusobacterium species is rare. Most cases of spontaneous spondylodiscitis are caused by Staphylococcus aureus and most postoperative cases are caused by Staphylococcus aureus or coagulase-negative staphylococci. Escherichia coli is the most common Gram-negative organism causing spondylodiscitis. Fusobacterium species are unusual causes for anaerobic spondylodiscitis. ...

BACKGROUND Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are increasingly implicated in recent patient series of spondylodiscitis, but there are no series of CoNS-spondylodiscitis available. The objective of this study was to compare the characteristics of patients with spontaneous CoNS-spondylodiscitis with those patients with Staphylococcus aureus (SA) spondylodiscitis. METHODS This was a retrosp...

BACKGROUND Infectious spondylodiscitis is characterized by the involvement of two adjacent vertebrae and the intervening disc. Incidence rate of the disease is estimated at 0.4-2 cases per 100000 per year. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common infectious agent causing pyogenic spondylodiscitis. Non-pyogenic infections of the spine are most frequently caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and...

Postoperative spondylodiscitis is relatively uncommon. This complication is associated with increased cost, and long-term of inability to work, and even morbidity. Although the majority of postoperative spondylodiscitis cases can be well managed by conservative treatment, postoperative spondylodiscitis after internal fixation and those cases that are unresponsive to the conservative treatment p...

Background Spondylodiscitis defines both vertebral osteomyelitis and discitis. Two important etiologies are involved in the pathogenesis of spondylodiscitis: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB-S) and pyogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (NTB-S). Diagnosis and treatment of spondylodiscitis are constantly delayed because the symptomatology is non-specific. There are controversial opinions ...

Anaerobic organisms are a rare cause of spondylodiscitis. Eggerthella lenta is an organism that is not commonly associated with spondylodiscitis. We describe a case of spondylodiscitis due to Eggerthella lenta in an 82-year-old Chinese woman presenting with back pain. The organism was isolated from tissue cultures obtained via radiology-guided biopsy.

Spondylodiscitis, the inflammation of the vertebral bodies and the intervertebral disk space, is the reason for low back pain in a minority of cases. This is caused by various pathogens. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is responsible for 17-39% of all the cases of spondylodiscitis. On the contrast, spondylodiscitis from non tuberculous mycobacteria is extremely rare in literature. We describe a 68 -...

While the imaging features of established spondylodiscitis are well known, other presentations may be misleading. The purpose of this article is to review the typical imaging features of spondylodiscitis as well as some more atypical and unusual imaging features (early spondylodiscitis, sceptic spondylitis, septic arthritis of facet joints, primary epidural abscess, unusual germs, neonate).

Background: Spondylodiscitis is a chameleon among infectious diseases due to the lack of specific symptoms with which it is associated. It is nevertheless a serious infection, with 7% mortality of hospitalized patients, in large part because of delayed diagnosis. The aim of this study was to develop a diagnosis and course-of-disease index to optimise its treatment. Material and methods: Through...
