in many hydroelectric dams, when the inflows are greater than the demand for energy, a portion of the water that could be used to generate electricity is diverted to the spillway and literally wasted. this energy, designated as “spilled turbinable energy”, could be used advantageously to generate other products or an energy vector that could be stored for later use, since in these situations the...

Residual fuel oil spilled into the sea from the Eshkol power station on 8 February, 1998 contaminated about 9 km of the foreshore north of the Ashdod harbour. A study of the aliphatic, polycyclic alkane and polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) composition of the spilled oil shows rapid weathering in the early stages followed by gradual slowdown after about three months. Weathering of isoprenoids and ...

Why and how do cells release ATP? It is not spilled energy. ATP becomes an extracellular regulator. Various cellular responses are initiated by purinergic receptors and signaling processes and are terminated by breakdown of ATP by ectonucleotidases. In epithelia, ATP regulates salt and water transport; other effects may be longer lasting.

The amount of ATP produced by Streptococcus bovis was larger than the amount that could be attributed to growth and maintenance, and even glucose-limited continuous cultures used ATP inefficiently (spilled ATP). Rapid-dilution-rate cultures always spilled more ATP than those growing at slow dilution rates, but rates of ATP spilling could also be enhanced by amino acid deprivation (with only amm...

Leakage of underwater crude oil pipes causes severe pollution to soil and water, and results in great economic loss. To predict the diffusion area of spilled oil before it reaches the water's surface and to reduce the time required for emergency response, numerical simulations were conducted on underwater spilled oil diffusion of bare crude oil pipes using FLUENT software. The influences of wat...

This paper describes the ongoing project on autonomous spilled oil and gas tracking buoy system and application to marine disaster prevention system for 5 years since FY2011 (http://www.naoe.eng.osaka-u.ac.jp/~kato/project/). The objectives of this project are as (1)autonomous tracking and monitoring of spilled plumes of oil and gas from subsea production facilities by an underwater buoy robot,...

BACKGROUND Spillage of bile and gallstones due to accidental perforation of the gallbladder wall is often encountered during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Although spilled stones were once considered harmless, there is increasing evidence that they can result in septic or other potential complications. CASE REPORT We report a case of spilled gallstones mimicking peritoneal metastases on radio...

Despite remarkable strides in science and technology, the strategy for spilled oil collection has remained almost the same since the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. The graphene vessel devised here can bring about an important yet basic change in the strategy for spilled oil collection. When it is placed on the oil-covered seawater, the graphene vessel selectively separates the oil, then collects...

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the procedure of choice for the treatment of symptomatic biliary disease. There is currently no agreement on the management of spilled gallstones, which commonly occurs during laparoscopic cholecystectomy and may produce significant morbidity. We present a case of spilled gallstones causing cicatrical cecal volvulus and also provide a review of pertinent literature.
