In the Rosaceae, Scrophulariaceae, and Solanaceae, the stylar product of the self-incompatibility (S-) locus is an RNase. Using protein sequence data from 34 RNase genes (three fungal RNases, seven angiosperm non-S RNases, 11 Rosaceae S-alleles, three Scrophulariaceae S-alleles, and ten Solanaceae S-alleles) we reconstructed the genealogy of angiosperm RNases using the neighbor joining method a...

The plastid genomes of some nonphotosynthetic parasitic plants have experienced an extreme reduction in gene content and an increase in evolutionary rate of remaining genes. Nothing is known of the dynamics of these events or whether either is a direct outcome of the loss of photosynthesis. The parasitic Scrophulariaceae and Orobanchaceae, representing a continuum of heterotrophic ability rangi...
Verbascumkurdistanicum Fırat (Scrophulariaceae), is described and illustrated as a new species that is located in Hakkâri, Turkey. In this study, diagnostic morphological characters of this and closely related species (Verbascumoreophilum K.Koch and Verbascumpyramidatum M. Bieb) are discussed. Furthermore, distribution maps for the three taxa are provided.
A molecular systematic study of Scrophulariaceae sensu lato using DNA sequences of three plastid genes (rbcL, ndhF, and rps2) revealed at least five distinct monophyletic groups. Thirty-nine genera representing 24 tribes of the Scrophulariaceae s.l. (sensu lato) were analyzed along with representatives of 15 other families of Lamiales. The Scrophulariaceae s.s. (sensu stricto) include part or a...
BACKGROUND AND AIMS In the last decade, genomic studies using DNA markers have strongly influenced the current phylogeny of angiosperms. Genome size and ploidy level have contributed to this discussion, being considered important characters in biosystematics, ecology and population biology. Despite the recent increase in studies related to genome size evolution and polyploidy incidence, only a ...
Lamiales sensu APG II (The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, 2003) constitute a major clade of flowering plants, with approximately 17,800 species (Judd & al., 2002) and 23 families, representing 12.3% of eudicot diversity (Stevens, 2001, onwards). They belong to a major asterid clade, the Lamiids (Bremer & al., 2002). The monophyly of Lamiales is comparatively uncontroversial and well supported by m...
Haustoria are parasitic plant speci®c organs that locate, attach to, and invade host plant tissues. Parasitic species of the Scrophulariaceae develop haustoria on their roots in response to chemical signals released by host plant roots. Haustorium development was induced in vitro in roots of the parasitic Scrophulariaceae Triphysaria versicolor by treating them with exudates obtained from maize...
