all experiments in this study were carried out in a flume which was located in the hydraulic laboratory of technical faculty in guilan university. the wave flume was 12 m long, 0.5 m wide, 0.5 m high and equipped with a wave-producing system and ultrasonic sensors. the objectives of current experimental study are to investigate sediment transport, bed formation and sustainability of sandy beach...
Article history: Received 31 August 2016 Accepted 16 September 2016 Available online 03 October 2016 Coastal sandy beaches are considered to be an integral part of the coastal ecosystems in marine environment. Sandy beach is an extremely dynamic environment where sand and water are always in motion. There are several fauna and flora occurring in this zone. The mole crab, Emerita asiatica is one...
Sandy ocean beaches are iconic assets that provide irreplaceable ecosystem services to society. Despite their great socioeconomic importance, beaches as ecosystems are severely under-represented in the literature on climate-change ecology. Here, we redress this imbalance by examining whether beach biota have been observed to respond to recent climate change in ways that are consistent with expe...
Sandy beaches are the prime sites for human recreation and underpin many coastal economies and developments. In many coastal areas worldwide, beach recreation relies on the use of off-road vehicles (ORVs) driven on the shore. Yet, the use of ORVs is not universally embraced due to social conflicts with other beach user groups and putative environmental consequences of vehicle traffic on sandy s...
The beach hopper amphipod Talorchestia quoyana is not distributed homogeneously in its sandy beach habitat, but instead occurs in dense patches under large pieces of tidal debris. This marked patchiness on a scale of just a few metres may create a higher level of aggregation among hosts for the symbionts and parasites of beach hoppers. Prevalence of infection by a mermithid nematode parasite va...
A numerical model is developed to examine coastal groundwater processes in a sandy beach, including the effects of tidal fluctuations, saltwater intrusion into an aquifer, and dynamics in unsaturated layers. The simulation results indicate: 1) ‘Local circulation’ is clearly formed in the aquifer near the shoreline owing mainly to tidal oscillations. 2) The circulation induces a landward bending...
Penicillium georgiense was isolated from sandy beach soil from Batu Ferringhi beach, Penang Island, Malaysia. The identification was based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer regions and β-tubulin sequences. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of P. georgiense in Malaysia.

Sandy beach ecological theory states that physical features of the beach control macrobenthic community structure on all but the most dissipative beaches. However, few studies have simultaneously evaluated the relative importance of physical, chemical and biological factors as potential explanatory variables for meso-scale spatio-temporal patterns of intertidal community structure in these syst...
Sandy beaches comprise one of the most important coastal resources worldwide, providing habitats to threatened vertebrates, supporting underappreciated invertebrate biodiversity, and delivering crucial ecosystem services and economic benefits to mankind. Monitoring of the natural resource condition of sandy beaches and assessments of the ecological impacts of human disturbance are, however, rar...
