The S17 murine stromal cell line was infected with retroviral vectors encoding the v-src and c-src oncogenes and cells expressing high levels of either pp60v-src or pp60c-src were isolated. Long-term bone marrow cultures (LTBMCs) established with these different stromal cell lines showed that progenitor cells proliferated to a greater extent in cultures with stromal cells that over-expressed ei...

Background and objectives: Anxiety is a chronic and common disorder worldwide and impairs the quality of life of affected people. Herbal medicines have long been used to treat CNS related disorders. S...

We have measured the Coulomb dissociation of 8B into 7Be and proton at 254 MeV/nucleon using a large-acceptance focusing spectrometer. The astrophysical S17 factor for the 7Be(p,γ)8B reaction at Ec.m. = 0.25−2.78 MeV is deduced yielding S17(0) = 20.6± 1.2 (exp.) ± 1.0 (theo.) eV-b. This result agrees with the presently adopted zero-energy S17 factor obtained in directreaction measurements and w...

A novel actinomycete strain, OFN S17(T), was isolated from a sample collected from Altamira Cave, Cantabria, Spain. This strain was identified by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The 16S rRNA, hsp65 and sod gene sequences of the strain were determined and compared with those of representative Nocardia species. The results showed that strain OFN S17(T) should be assigned to the genus Nocar...

Quorum sensing (QS) systems communicate bacterial population and stimulate microbial pathogenesis through signaling molecules. Inhibition of QS signals potentially suppresses microbial infections. Antimicrobial properties of Streptomyces have been extensively studied, however, less is known about quorum sensing inhibitory (QSI) activities of Streptomyces. This study explored the QSI potential o...

The Coulomb dissociation (CD) of 8B has emerged as a landmark testing ground of the very method of CD for measuring the cross section of the low-energy 7Be(p, γ )8B direct capture (DC) reaction. Recent claims of evidence of slope difference between CD and DC results are critically examined. We include all relevant RIKEN2 data and all previously published DC data, and we examine the extracted so...

We calculate the energy spectrum for 8B dissociation on a Pb target to all orders in the Coulomb and nuclear fields, and show that the slope of S17(E) obtained in previous analyses of Coulomb dissociation data is too steep, due to deficiencies in the conventional first-order analysis that was used. With a more complete theory that avoids the far-field approximation and includes E2, nuclear and ...

The Coulomb dissociation of B, measured with high precision by the GSI group, is in excellent agreement with the astrophysical cross section factor (S17) measured by the Weizmann group with a Be target. The GSI and Weizmann data are in good agreement with the Seattle data at high energies, but at low energies we observe a slight systematic (up to 2σ) deviation, yet the Seattle group repeatedly ...

Bifidobacteria are an important component of the human gastrointestinal microbiota and are frequently used as probiotics. The genetic inaccessibility and lack of molecular tools commonly used in other bacteria have hampered a detailed analysis of the genetic determinants of bifidobacteria involved in their adaptation to, colonization of, and interaction with the host. In the present study, a ra...

The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a highly potent angiogenic molecule, is thought to be correlated with the development of colon cancer; however, direct evidence for a role of VEGF in metastasis is lacking. This study was designed to more directly establish the role of VEGF in the growth and metastasis of human colon cancer using a genetically engineered cancer cell l...
