A Golomb Ruler is defined as a ruler that has marks unevenly spaced at integer locations in such a way that the distance between any two marks is unique. Unlike usual rulers, they have the ability to measure more discrete measures than the number of marks they possess. Although the definition of a Golomb Ruler does not place any restriction on the length of the ruler, researchers are usually in...

We collect the main construction methods for Golomb rulers available in the literature along with their proofs. In particular, we demonstrate that the Bose-Chowla method yields Golomb rulers that appear as the main diagonal of a special subfamily of Golomb Costas arrays. We also show that Golomb rulers can be composed to yield longer Golomb rulers.

We describe Ruler, a flexible language for network traffic inspection and rewriting. Ruler was designed to support anonymisation at high link rates. As anonymisation requires a trade-off between privacy and usefulness of the anonymised data, flexibility is essential. For this purpose, Ruler allows matching of arbitrary traffic patterns by means of regular expressions, and construction of arbitr...

What is a ‘molecular ruler’? The lengths of many linear polymers in biology are specified with remarkably accuracy, indicating they have very similar or the same numbers of subunits. Examples include bacteriophage tails, bacterial flagellum hooks, bacterial ‘injectisome’ needles, and the thin and thick filaments of striated muscles. Such exact assembly requires explanation, because the same sub...

Tax extraction in Qing China was low relative to Western Europe. It is not obvious why: China was much more absolutist and had stronger rights over property and people. Why did the Chinese not convert their absolute power into revenue? We propose a model, supported by historical evidence, which suggests that i) the center could not ask its tax collecting agents to levy high taxes because it wou...

Periodic binary sequences with the \trinomial property" are considered. A conjecture of Golomb and Gong concerning these sequences is disproved.
