Infection with Baylisascaris procyonis roundworms is rare but often fatal and typically affects children. We attempted to determine parameters of viability and methods of inactivating the eggs of these roundworms. Loss of viability resulted when eggs were heated to 62°C or desiccated for 7 months but not when frozen at -15°C for 6 months.

Two major phyla are responsible for human disease: Nemathelminthes (roundworms) and Platyhelminthes (flatworms). Nematodes are categorized by their migration route. Enterobius and Trichuris are found intraintestinally, whereas filarial worms live in tissue and lymphatics. Platyhelminthes is further divided into two classes: cestodes, or tapeworms; and trematodes, or flukes. Nemathelminthes (Rou...

Parasitic gastroenteritis, caused by roundworms (nematodes), is well recognised as a major production-limiting disease, particularly in lambs. Effective parasite control has become heavily dependent on anthelmintics. The development of anthelmintic resistance by roundworms poses a potential crisis for sheep producers and measures to avert and delay this are essential. This report summarises the...

BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of roundworm infection in working horses slaughtered for meat. In these horses anthelmintics had not been used. MATERIAL AND METHODS Roundworms were collected post-mortem from small intestines of 83 horses. RESULTS The mean prevalence of roundworm infection was 12% and intensity--46.7 specimens per horse. Infection was found o...

Knowledge of cross-transmission and hybridization between parasites of humans and reservoir hosts is critical for understanding the evolution of the parasite and for implementing control programmes. There is now a consensus that populations of pig and human Ascaris (roundworms) show significant genetic subdivision. However, it is unclear whether this has resulted from a single or multiple host ...
