What is the role of leaders in large organizations? We propose a model in which a leader helps to overcome a misalignment of followers’ incentives that inhibits coordination, while adapting the organization to a changing environment. Past findings indicate that middle-aged adults in the United States tend to be more resistant to attitude change than younger and older adults, but little is known about why this is so. The authors propose that midlife adults' disproportionate occupation of high-power social roles (which call for resoluteness) may partly explain their heightened resistance to persuasion. Gale [D. Gale, The game of HEX and the Brouwer fixed-point theorem, American Mathematical Monthly 86 (1979) 818–827] has shown that the so called HEX game theorem that any HEX game has one winner is equivalent to the Brouwer fixed point theorem. In this paper we will show that under some assumptions about marking rules of HEX games, the HEX game theorem for a 6 · 6 HEX game is equivalent to the...

The Gibbard-Satterthwaite Theorem on the manipulability of socialchoice rules assumes resoluteness: there are no ties, no multi-member choice sets. Generalizations based on a familiar lottery idea allow ties but assume perfectly shared probabilistic beliefs about their resolution. We prove a more straightforward generalization that assumes almost no limit on ties or beliefs about them.

We revisit the neutrality requirement in social choice theory. We propose a weakening of the standard neutrality condition, by allowing for different procedural treatment for different alternatives while entailing that alternatives enjoy same ex-ante possibility to be chosen. We compare these two conditions theoretically and computationally. Furthermore, we explore social choice problems in whi...
