The 24 hour activity patterns of three non-native gobiids (round goby Neogobius melanostomus, Western tubenose goby Proterorhinus semilunaris and bighead goby Ponticola kessleri) were assessed over 46 consecutive months between 2011 and 2014 from their occurrence in the cooling water intake of a nuclear power plant on the River Rhine, Germany. In total, 117717 gobiids were identified and classi...

Females of the stream goby Rhinogobius sp. DA with paternal care favor males courting in fast water currents, whereby they mate males of high parental ability. Here we examined female choice of male nest size of this goby in laboratory. The dichotomous choice experiment clearly indicated that females prefer large nests. Spawning at large nests seems to improve egg survival rates in natural habi...

Males performing alternative mating tactics are often characterized by a strong dimorphism in both primary and secon...

Acoustic signals can encode crucial information about species identity and individual quality. We recorded and compared male courtship drum sounds of the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus and the painted goby P. pictus and examined if they can function in species recognition within sympatric populations. We also examined which acoustic features are related to male quality and the factors that af...

Yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus affected with X-cell pseudotumors were sampled from a river estuary in Tokyo Bay, Japan. We amplified the gene for small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) of X-cells of the goby with PCR using universal primers. The gene that we obtained (DDBJ Accession no. AB451874) showed 91% sequence identity to that of the X-cells of the flathead flounder Hippoglossoid...
