background: the appearance of multi-drug resistant microorganisms is becoming a global problem. already several strategies have been employed for overcoming antibiotic resistance issue. developing new antimicrobial compounds from microbial source could be a beneficial solution. hence screening programs in order to discover new antibiotics from microbial entities is interesting. because of high ...

Psoas abscesses are classified into primary or secondary according to infectious etiology. However, the psoas abscess caused by actinomycete together with Escherichia coli infection is very rare. Here we report a case of psoas abscess caused by actinomycete together with Escherichia coli infection in a young woman. The disease was treated successfully. A literature review of psoas abscess in re...

Actinoalloteichus hymeniacidonis HPA 177T is a Gram-positive, strictly aerobic, black pigment producing and spore-forming actinomycete, which forms branching vegetative hyphae and was isolated from the marine sponge Hymeniacidon perlevis. Actinomycete bacteria are prolific producers of secondary metabolites, some of which have been developed into anti-microbial, anti-tumor and immunosuppressive...

During the course of screening for new antibiotics from rare actinomycetes in our laboratory, a rare actinomycete initially designated as strain A-3416 was found to produce an antibiotic with strong activity against staphylococci resistant to various antibiotics. From its unique physicochemical properties, it was judged to be a new antibiotic and named antibiotic AB-64. In this paper, taxonomic...

We reassess the coevolution between actinomycete bacteria and fungus-gardening (attine) ants. Actinomycete bacteria are of special interest because they are metabolic mutualists of diverse organisms (e.g., in nitrogen-fixation or antibiotic production) and because Pseudonocardia actinomycetes are thought to serve disease-suppressing functions in attine gardens. Phylogenetic information from cul...

Streptomyces azureus ATCC 14921 belongs to the Streptomyces cyaneus cluster and is known to be a thiostrepton producer. Here, we report a draft genome sequence for this strain, consisting of 350 contigs containing a total of 8,790,525 bp, 8,164 predicted coding sequences, and a G+C content of 70.9%.

Three new 10-membered macrolides, saccharothriolides A-C (1-3), were discovered from a rare actinomycete Saccharothrix sp. A1506. All of the sp(3) carbons in the 10-membered ring had chirality, which was determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis and TDDFT-calculation of ECD spectra. Saccharothriolide B (2) exhibited cytotoxicity against human tumor cell lines HeLa and HT1080.

Planomonospora sphaerica is a rare actinomycete that is a potential antibiotic producer. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of P. sphaerica strain JCM9374. This is the first genome report of a bacterium belonging to the genus Planomonospora The genome information of P. sphaerica will contribute to studies on the structure and function of antibiotics.
