Total power radiometer has a simple configuration and the best theoretical resolution. Gain fluctuations and calibration errors, however, can induce severe errors in the solved scene brightness temperature. To estimate the overall radiometer performance we present a numerical simulation tool that can be used to determine the radiometric resolution. Our model considers three main components that...
The pushbroom radiometer principle has been conceived in order to avoid the mechanical scanning traditionally used in imaging microwave radiometer systems. But does a real life pushbroom radiometer actually work as predicted, producing imagery as we are used to see it from a scanner? To answer this question a 21 channel, 36.5 GHz pushbroom radiometer intended for airborne use has been designed ...
Abstract— The SMAP microwave radiometer is a fully-polarimetric L-band radiometer flown on the SMAP satellite in a 6 AM/ 6 PM sun-synchronous orbit at 685 km altitude. Since April, 2015, the radiometer is under calibration and validation to assess the quality of the radiometer L1B data product. Calibration methods including the SMAP L1B TA2TB (from Antenna Temperature (TA) to the Earth’s surf...
The Ka-band interferometric radiometer is developed as a demonstration model of 2-D interferometric radiometer to evaluate sub-Y-type array which was proposed by the research group SSL at K-JIST. This new antenna configuration is proposed for high spatial resolution imaging radiometer and it shows better performance than conventional Y-type array. The implemented radiometer is developed at 37 G...
The 92 GHz radiometer system, which will be used for an atmosphere remote sensing, is presented in this paper. The characteristics of RE and IF module are described. The architecture of radiometer including data acquisition, data storage and digital signal processing using notebook computer are explained and the result of indoor experiment is introduced. The radiometer system is designed as a t...
The NASA Earth Science System Pathfinder (ESSP) mission Aquarius, will measure global ocean surface salinity with ~100 km spatial resolution every 7-days with an average monthly salinity accuracy of 0.2 psu (parts per thousand). This requires an L-band low-noise radiometer with the long-term calibration stability of ≤0.1 K over 7 days. A three-year research program on radiometer stability has a...
An airborne microwave radiometer has been thoroughly characterized by the Met Office, using a thermalvacuum test facility and flight test data. Scan dependence due to mirror reflectivity considerations, as well as calibration target thermometry, target thermal gradients, radiometer noise, and radiometer stability are quantified. A resultant accuracy of approximately 1 K is achieved.
