Two cases of pyothorax-associated malignant lymphoma were reported. The presence of chronic tuberculous pyothorax after thoracoplasty and the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on the chest wall are closely related. Both patients had suffered from tuberculous pyothorax for more than thirty years, and developed new painful chest wall tumors. CT and MRI delineated both malignant lymphoma and p...
Pyothorax-associated lymphoma (PAL) is a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that occurs in the pleural cavity of patients with a long-standing history of pyothorax. Here, we report a left pleuropneumonectomy performed for PAL in a 76-year-old male patient with a 60-year history of pyothorax due to tuberculosis.
Clinical presentation of canine pyothorax can be delayed and nonspecific. Fever, dyspnea, and weight loss are the most common physical examination findings. Diagnosis is made with radiographic findings and analysis of aspirated pleural fluid. Pleural infections have a high prevalence of polymicrobic infections. Antibiotic therapy without drainage and lavage is ineffective for pyothorax. Excessi...
There are no previous reports of esophageal perforation due to endoscopic submucosal dissection developing into pyothorax. We herein describe a case of esophageal healing following perforation in a 60-year-old woman undergoing esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection. Post-procedural computed tomography revealed pyothorax in the right thoracic cavity, compressing the right lung. The pyothora...
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence, outcome and risk factors for postoperative pyothorax in dogs undergoing thoracic surgery. METHODS Case records were reviewed retrospectively to identify dogs with post thoracic surgery pyothorax, defined as septic neutrophilic inflammation within the pleural space based on cytology and/or a positive bacterial culture of pleural fluid. Those identified we...
Pyothorax-associated lymphoma (PAL) is a rare haematological malignancy often associated with artificial pneumothorax due to the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. A 76 year old man with chronic tube-drained pyothorax and a history of artificial pneumothorax for pulmonary tuberculosis was admitted to our hospital because of progressive right thoracic pain, weight loss, and pyrexia. After clin...
a 16-month-old holstein heifer with a history of anorexia and respiratory distress was referred to the veterinary research and teaching hospital of tehran university. heart and lung sounds were inaudible on the left side but greatly increased on the right side. on electrocardiography (ecg), decreased amplitudes of ecg parameters were observed. ultrasonography results revealed a pleural effusion...
A 28-year-old woman was seen by an emergency physician for flu-like symptoms and discharged home with a presumptive viral syndrome. A week later, she was readmitted to the emergency department by ambulance in severe respiratory distress. She presented with a blood pressure of 78/42 mm Hg, heart rate at 120 beats per minute, respirations at 50 per minute, a temperature of 103.3 degrees Fahrenhei...
P leural disease in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is well documented and commonly presents with pleural effusions in 20% of patients. However, solid pleural involvement is less common and is usually a secondary event. Primary pleural lymphomas are extremely rare and, in a series reported by Burgener and Hamlin, pleural plaques were seen in less then 4% of cases. Two types of primary pleural lymphomas ...
Pyothorax-associated lymphoma is a relatively rare type of lymphoma that occurs in patients who have long histories of tuberculous pleuritis or induced pneumothorax. It is a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of mainly the B-cell phenotype and is strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection. A majority of these cases have been reported in Japan, although some cases have occurred in Western...
