The primary host of plague in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), China, is Marmota himalayana, which plays an essential role in the maintenance, transmission, and prevalence of plague. To achieve a more clear insight into the differentiation of M. himalayana, complete cytochrome b (cyt b) gene and 11 microsatellite loci were analyzed for a total of 423 individuals from 43 localities in the northe...
The lymphocyte potassium channel Kv1.3 is widely regarded as a promising new target for immunosuppression. To identify a potent small-molecule Kv1.3 blocker, we synthesized a series of 5-phenylalkoxypsoralens and tested them by whole-cell patch clamp. The most potent compound of this series, 5-(4-phenylbutoxy)psoralen (Psora-4), blocked Kv1.3 in a use-dependent manner, with a Hill coefficient o...
The Eastern woodchuck (Marmota monax) is a classical animal model for studying hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in humans. Recently, we found that Marmota himalayana, an Asian animal species closely related to Marmota monax, is susceptible to woodchuck hepatitis virus (WHV) infection and can be used as a new mammalian model for HBV infection. However, the lac...
This is the first report of a complete mitochondrial genome sequence from Himalayan marmot (Marmota himalayana, class Marmota). We determined the M. himalayana mitochondrial (mt) genome sequence by using long-PCR methods and a primer-walking sequencing strategy with genus-specific primers. The complete mt genome of M. himalayana was 16,443 bp in length and comprised 13 protein-coding genes, 2 r...
The voltage-gated potassium channel Kv1.3 has been recently identified as a molecular target that allows the selective pharmacological suppression of effector memory T cells (T(EM)) without affecting the function of naïve T cells (T(N)) and central memory T cells (T(CM)). We found that Kv1.3 was expressed on glomeruli and some tubules in rats with anti-glomerular basement membrane glomeruloneph...
A new species of Morulina from China is described and illustrated. It is close to M. orientis Tanaka from Japan and M. himalayana Cassagnau from Nepal. There are 12 tubercles on the head of all three species, but they can be separated by a number of chaetotaxic characters. A key for identification of all the species in the genus is given.
Escherichia coli is both of a widespread harmless gut commensal and a versatile pathogen of humans. Domestic animals are a well-known reservoir for pathogenic E. coli. However, studies of E. coli populations from wild animals that have been separated from human activities had been very limited. Here we obtained 580 isolates from intestinal contents of 116 wild Marmot Marmota himalayana from Qin...
The Maddenia clade of Prunus L. is monographed based on herbarium and field studies. Four species are currently accepted in this group: Prunus himalayana J.Wen, Prunus hypoleuca (Koehne) J.Wen, Prunus hypoxantha (Koehne) J.Wen, and Prunus gongshanensis J.Wen, with the last described herein as a new species. Maddenia fujianensis Y.T.Chang and Maddenia incisoserrata T.T.Yü & T.C.Ku are treated as...
