Proton MR spectroscopy of the mammary gland area is used to be considered in the realm of basic research, but as a result of the advances in MR techniques, it is now being performed in ordinary clinical practice. It is particularly noteworthy that useful clinical data are now being accumulated with 1.5T MR units, which are the standard units. We think that, at this point, it is very important t...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is a neurocutaneous syndrome caused by a genetic enzyme deficiency in lipid metabolism. Our purpose was to characterize the nature of the cerebral involvement in SLS. METHODS MR imaging was performed in 18 patients (aged 5 months to 45 years) and repeated in 14. Single-voxel proton MR spectra were acquired from cerebral white matter and gr...

Magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy has received little attention from the clinical radiology community. Indeed, most MR spectroscopic studies are performed by a small and dedicated group of individuals, mostly basic scientists. This behavior is partly because MR spectroscopy does not produce “pictures” but results in “graphs,” and until lately, it could only be obtained with dedicated units a...

background epilepsy, a well-known mostly idiopathic neurologic disorder, has to be correctly diagnosed and properly treated. up to now, several diagnostic approaches have been processed to determine the epileptic focus. objectives the aim of this study was to discover whether proton-mr-spectroscopic imaging (mrsi) aids in the diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy in conjunction with classical ele...

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) has been in use in biochemistry labs for more than 50 yr. In its earlier years, it was used primarily for in vitro chemical analysis of small samples. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful imaging technique that combines exquisite sensitivity to soft tissue contrast with the ability to demonstrate anatomy in many different planes and projec...

A patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 was found to have an enhancing lesion in the cerebellum. Proton MR spectroscopy was performed and showed findings similar to those seen in healthy volunteers. A 3-year follow-up MR study showed the lesion was unchanged. Proton MR spectroscopy might prove useful in the diagnosis of hamartomas.

PURPOSE We compared the metabolic information obtained from single-voxel proton MR spectroscopy and positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. METHODS Twenty-nine patients with temporal lobe epilepsy were screened for metabolic abnormalities with both proton MR spectroscopy and PET. Lateralization with MR spectroscopy was possible by using NAA/(Cho+Cr) and an ...
