the robert/sc (pseudothalidomide) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, associated with phocomelia and craniofacial abnormalities. an anomalous fetus with lower limb phocomelia and micromelia, lumbar myeloschisis, upper limb and ribs defects and craniofacial abnormalities is reported whose diabetic mother took mebendazole and glibenclamide in early pregnancy. ultrasonographic finding...
In spite of the widespread use of obstetrical sonography, the prenatal detection of presumed adrenal hemorrhage remains extremely unPathologic proof is ~ a r e . ~ , ~ Several authors have noted adrenal calcifications at birth and have speculated that they represent the sequelae of prenatal adrenal hemorrhage. However, without pathologic proof, differentiation from spontaneously resolved neurob...
Vein of Galen aneurysm malformation (VGAM) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly. Although the cause of VGAM remains to be elucidated, the current hypothesis is persistence of the embryonic vascular supply, which leads to progressive enlargement and formation of the aneurysmal component of a typical VGAM. Here, we present a 36-year-old woman at 23 weeks' gestation (gravida 3, para 2) who was ev...
ydranencephaly is a severe, sporadic brain abnormality characterized by absence of the cerebral hemispheres, which are replaced by a large supratentorial fluid-filled saclike structure surrounding the brain stem.1,2 This condition is thought to be the result of extensive brain necrosis secondary to a vascular insult involving the internal carotid arteries, which occurs after the brain and ventr...
rachnoid cysts are intra-arachnoid sacs containing cerebrospinal fluid–like liquid and represent 1% of all intracranial masses in neonates.1 Although well reported, the precise etiology and pathogenesis of arachnoid cysts are uncertain. Being developmental in origin, arachnoid cysts can be detected on prenatal screening. Although sonography is used routinely for fetal assessment, it is difficul...
A precise prenatal diagnosis of hemangioma may be uncertain although a variety of the antenatal appearances on 2-dimensional sonography have been reported. A 27-year-old primigravida was referred at 32 weeks of gestation for evaluation of a fetal nuchal mass. Two-dimensional sonography showed an extracranial mixed echogenic mass (65 x 54 x 59 mm) occupying the posterior neck. Color Doppler imag...
BACKGROUND The role of obstetric sonography in the development of diagnostic ultrasound technology has remained invaluable in obstetric and gynaecological investigation. OBJECTIVES This work investigated the awareness of information, expectations and experiences of pregnant women coming for obstetric sonography. METHODS One hundred and ten (110) pregnant women in Anambra State of Nigeria we...
Congenital lung lesions that can be diagnosed on the basis of prenatal sonography include cystic adenomatoid malformations and extrapulmonary bronchopulmonary sequestrations. Intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital malformation of the lung. The prenatal sonographic features of this condition are reported here.
A prospective program for the prenatal detection of neural tube defects in a high-risk pregnancy group has been under way for one year. Twenty high-risk mothers have undergone a complete prenatal work-up, including sonography, amniocentesis, and amniotic fluid and maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein quantitation. Within this group, two cases were prospectively diagnosed and were later confirmed.
