The authors evaluated the biocompatibility of three suture materials, polyglecaprone 25, polyglactin 910 and polytetrafluorethylene, implanted into subcutaneous tissue in the dorsal region of 20 Wistar albinus rats. After periods of 2, 7, 14 and 21 days, the rats were sacrificed and the specimens were processed for routine histotechnical analysis and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The rate...

The addition of different polymers, such as polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE), to denture base resins could be an option to modify acrylic resin mechanical properties. This study evaluated the surface hardness, impact and flexural strength, flexural modulus and peak load of 2 acrylic resins, one subjected to a long and another subjected to a short polymerization cycle, which were prepared with or w...

An atherosclerotic aneurysm of the right coronary artery complicated by a recent myocardial infarction was successfully treated with coronary artery stenting, using a device consisting of 2 stents with a layer of expandable polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) placed between them. A follow-up angiograph 5 months after the procedure showed sustained initial results.

Diets enriched with fish oil may favorably affect the vascular perturbations underlying synthetic graft thrombosis. Therefore, these studies were designed to test the hypothesis that diets enriched with fish oil would decrease the incidence of thrombosis in newly constructed polytetrafluorethylene grafts. A double-blind, randomized trial was conducted. Twenty-four patients were randomized to re...

Surgical implantation of a biomaterial triggers foreign-body-induced fibrous encapsulation. Two major mechanisms of this complex physiological process are (I) chemotaxis of fibroblasts from surrounding tissue to the implant region, followed by (II) tissue remodeling. As an alternative to animal studies, we here propose a process-aligned in vitro test platform to investigate the material depende...

Introduction Simulated-use buildup biofilm (BBF) model was used to assess various extraction fluids and friction methods to determine the optimal sample collection method for polytetrafluorethylene channels. In addition, simulated-use testing was performed for the channel and lever cavity of duodenoscopes. Materials and methods BBF was formed in polytetrafluorethylene channels using Enterococ...

PURPOSE: Management of chest wall reconstruction (CWR) following oncologic resection is challenging due to the nature if pathology, the radical procedure, and the employment of prosthetic materials required for biomechanical stability. Traditional material for CWR includes synthetic prosthesis (i.e. polypropylene or polytetrafluorethylene). However, biologic meshes might result in less wound co...
