Analogues of dihydroxyacetone phosphate and of 3-phosphoglycerate were made in which the phosphate group, -O-PO3H2, is replaced by the phosphonomethyl group, -CH2-PO3H2. The analogue of dihydroxyacetone phosphate is a substrate for aldolase and glycerol 1-phosphate dehydrogenase (Stribling, 1974), but not for triose phosphate isomerase. The analogue of 3-phosphoglycerate oxidizes NADH under the...

DNA-directed RNA polymerase from Escherichia coli can break down RNA by catalysing the reverse of the reaction: NTP + (RNA)n = (RNA)n+1 + PPi where n indicates the number of nucleotide residues in the RNA molecule, to yield nucleoside triphosphates. This reaction requires the ternary complex of the polymerase with template DNA and the RNA that it has synthesized. It is now shown that methyleneb...

4-Arsono-2-hydroxybutanoic acid, the analogue of 3-phosphoglycerate in which -CH2-AsO3H2 replaces -O-PO3H2, was synthesized. It proved to be a substrate for phosphoglycerate kinase. Its Michaelis constant was only slightly higher than that of the natural substrate, but its catalytic constant was about 1300 times smaller.

Compounds containing the -PO3H2 function, such as monoesters of phosphoric acid and phosphonic acids, specifically bind to aluminium oxide in aqueous solution under experimental conditions where non-phosphorylated compounds are completely desorbed. The bound organic phosphate can be specifically displaced by aqueous solution of inorganic phosphates thus allowing their separation or detection by...

Pristine multiwall carbon nanotubes [MWCNTs] have been functionalized with various groups (-COOH, -SO3H, -PO3H2) using different single- and double-step chemical routes. Various chemical treatments were given to MWCNTs using hydrochloric, nitric, phosphoric, and sulphuric acids, followed by a microwave treatment. The effect of the various chemical treatments and the dispersion using a surfactan...

Amphiphilic calix[4]arenes were designed as phospholipid mimics by incorporating PO3H2 or NMe3(+) head groups. Using PC12 cells and three stressors (H2O2, menadione and glutamate), we established safe calix[4]arene levels that are able not only to deliver antioxidant payloads of curcumin, but intriguingly also have inherent antioxidant properties. The calix[4]arenes appear to be potent syntheti...

Organophosphorus compounds are well known as oilfield scale inhibitors. Earlier work showed that a series of new and well-known bone-targeting drugs incorporating non-toxic bisphosphonates (BPs) (PO3H2–C–PO3H2) gave good inhibition performance against calcite based on produced water from the Heidrun oilfield, Norwegian Sea, Norway. However, these chemicals only moderate calcium compatibility ac...

Based on the consideration that compound 1 with a -PO3H2 group can be hydrolyzed into compound 3 which shows low solubility in aqueous solutions and thus aggregation can occur easily, a new fluorescence turn-on assay has been constructed for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) with compound 1. ALP at concentrations as low as 18 mU mL(-1) can be assayed with compound 1. Moreover, compound 1 has been succ...

Methylidynetrisphosphonates are representatives of geminal polyphosphonates bearing three phosphonate (PO3H2) groups at the bridged carbon atom. Like well-known methylenebisphosphonates (BPs), they are characterized by a P-C-P backbone structure and are chemically stable mimetics of the endogenous metabolites, i.e., inorganic pyrophosphates (PPi). Because of its analogy to PPi and an ability to...
