The antimicrobial susceptibilities of 421 Pasteurella haemolytica and 158 P. multocida isolates recovered from cattle with respiratory disease were determined with a microdilution minimal inhibitory concentration test system. Isolates were analyzed for patterns of resistance to ampicillin, ceftiofur, erythromycin, gentamicin, penicillin, spectinomycin, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfadimethoxine, te...

Fifty serotyped isolates each of Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella haemolytica were tested on the API 20E strip (Analytab Products, Plainview, N.Y.), the Oxi/Ferm tube (Roche Diagnostics, Nutley, N.J.), and the Minitek system (BBL Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md.). None of the rapid test systems reliable identified these organisms. With the API system, discrepancies between expected ...

Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica is the only pathogen that consistently causes severe bronchopneumonia and rapid death of bighorn sheep (BHS; Ovis canadensis) under experimental conditions. Paradoxically, Bibersteinia (Pasteurella) trehalosi and Pasteurella multocida have been isolated from BHS pneumonic lungs much more frequently than M. haemolytica. These observations suggest that there m...

Pasteurella haemolytica is a major contributor to neonatal pneumonia in lambs; which continues to be a major problem. Experimentation was conducted to determine the efficacy of vaccinating pregnant ewes to reduce the incidence of pneumonia in newborn lambs. Vaccines utilized in this experimentation included three different commercial Pasteurella haemolytica vaccines intended for use in cattle a...

The ROB-1 beta-lactamase, previously described in Haemophilus influenzae, has been found in the genus Pasteurella. In three bovine strains of Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella haemolytica, ROB-1 production was determined by plasmids of 4.4 kilobases. In one porcine strain of Pasteurella aerogenes, the enzyme seems to be chromosomally encoded.

Experiments using different types of antigen-adjuvant preparations were conducted in outbred sheep to compare effects of adjuvants on immune responses. Trinitrophenyl-ovalbumin (TNP-ovalbumin) incorporated in a preparation with nonionic block copolymers elicited high antibody titers to both ovalbumin and TNP. Different humoral immune responses were observed when Pasteurella haemolytica lipopoly...

Lesions of calf pneumonia caused by Pasteurella haemolytica or P. mu/t,ocida were examined histopathologically using an immunoperoxidase technique for the detection of the bacterial antigen. The results indicated that: 1) multifocal coagulation necrosis sharply demarcated by degenerated leukocytes was a characteristic pulmonary lesion caused by P. haemolytica, 2) other bacteria than P. haemolyt...

BACKGROUND Sheep constitute the second major component of livestock in Ethiopia. However, efficient utilization of this potential resource is hampered by combination of health problems, poor management and feed shortage. Haramaya district is one of the remote settings in Ethiopia where information about the livestock disease is not well documented. Hence this study was conducted to determine th...

The prepuces of lambs aged 6--8 months and semen of 2 adult rams were found to be infected with gram negative, non-motile, non-haemolytic, pleomorphic bacilli. These organisms were compared with those of known strains of actinobacillus actinomycetem comitans. Actinobacillus seminis and Pasteurella haemolytica, using the API 20 E classification system. Applying the principles of numerical taxono...

Mice immunized with the potassium thiocyanate extract of Pasteurella haemolytica, serotype 1, were found to resist a challenge infection of P. multocida type A, thus demonstrating cross-protection. This finding was further supported by the finding that an antiserum directed against the potassium thiocyanate extract of P. haemolytica was bactericidal to P. multocida and vice versa.
