The long-recognized genus Gaura was shown recently to be deeply nested within one of two major clades of Oenothera. New molecular data indicate further taxonomic changes are necessary in Oenothera sect. Gaura. We make these changes here, including three new combinations, in advance of the Onagraceae treatment for the Flora of North America. The new phylogenetic studies show that several pairs o...

The sedative and analgesic potential of Urena sinuata L. was investigated for the first time in this study. The crude methanol extract of Urena sinuata L. leaves was evaluated for its central nervous system (CNS) depressant effect using rodent behavioral models. Methanol extract of Urena sinuata at a dose of 400 mg/kg body weight, displayed a suppressive effect on motor activity, exploratory be...

The model plant Oenothera has contributed significantly to the biological sciences and it dominated the early development of plant genetics, cytogenetics, and evolutionary biology. The great advantage of using Oenothera as a model system is a large body of genetic, cytological, morphological, and ecological information collected over more than a century. The Oenothera system offers a well-studi...

During a survey for fungal pathogens associated with ferns in Brazil, a tar spot-causing fungus was found on fronds of Pleopeltis astrolepis. This was recognised as belonging to Inocyclus (Parmulariaceae). After comparison with other species in the genus, it was concluded that the fungus on P. astrolepis is a new species, described here as Inocyclus angularis sp. nov.
