a hundred and five strains of salmonella havana were studied from the patients of pediatric hospital of tehran and tabriz during 1976-86. the sources of the strains in order to their frequency were from-stool, blood, spinal, fluid, wound and urine. from the epidemiological point of view salmonella havana is serotype of most non-typhoid salmonella. all of the strains had drug resistancy and most...
To determine the prevalence of invasive nontyphoid salmonellosis and typhoid fever in Malawi and South Africa, we compared case frequency and patient age distribution. Invasive nontyphoid salmonellosis showed a clear bimodal age distribution; the infection developed in women at a younger age than in men. Case frequency for typhoid fever was lower than for salmonellosis.
Nontyphoid salmonellae are major causes of foodborne infection worldwide. They still seriously affect human health, causing morbidity and mortality. They induce severe salmonellosis, even in modestly immunocompromised hosts, resulting in bacteremic spread, focal infection, and persistence in deep sites, including the en-dovascular region. Approximately 5% of individuals with gastrointestinal il...
This study sought to find the risk factors for primary bacteremia, endovascular infection, and in-hospital death for patients without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who have nontyphoid salmonellosis. From September 1995 through September 2001, 301 patients with nontyphoid salmonellosis were admitted to our hospital; of these patients, 121 had primary bacteremia, and 28 had endovascular infe...
RATIONALE The pathway of Nontyphoid Salmonella meningitis, especially in exclusive breastfeeding infants, has not been well characterized. PATIENT CONCERNS We analyzed data related to nontyphoid Salmonella meningitis in 4 infants. DIAGNOSES No diarrhea was observed and the coproculture was negative for all patients. INTERVENTIONS Early diagnosis and treatment with combination of third-gen...
Therapy of invasive human salmonellosis is complicated by increasing antimicrobial resistance. Food animals are the principal source of infection with nontyphoid Salmonella. We report the emergence of broad-spectrum-cephalosporin resistance in Salmonella enterica serovar Kentucky in poultry in Ireland.
A three-phase study was conducted to compare Hektoen enteric agar (HE), Rambach agar (Ra), SM-ID medium (SM), xylose-lysine-Tergitol 4 agar (XLT4), novobiocin-brilliant green-glycerol-lactose agar (NBGL), and modified semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis medium (MSRV) for the recovery of nontyphoid salmonellae from stool specimens. After evaluation of the first two phases, which resulted in the elim...
Recently, antimicrobial resistance among nontyphoid Salmonella serotypes has been increasingly recognized. In southern Taiwan, we encountered 3 cases of invasive infections caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Choleraesuis with resistance to ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone. Resistance to ciprofloxacin was related to nucleotide mutations in gyrA and parC, and resistance to ceftriaxone was relate...
Ciprofloxacin-resistant Salmonella enterica Typhimurium and Choleraesuis from Pigs to Humans, Taiwan
We evaluated the disk susceptibility data of 671 nontyphoid Salmonella isolates collected from different parts of Taiwan from March 2001 to August 2001 and 1,261 nontyphoid Salmonella isolates from the National Taiwan University Hospital from 1996 to 2001. Overall, ciprofloxacin resistance was found in 2.7% (18/671) of all nontyphoid Salmonella isolates, in 1.4% (5/347) of Salmonella enterica s...
