this is a case of a modified blalock-taussig shunt, which was complicated by perigraft transudative, fibrinous fluid accumulation and recurrence after surgical intervention. follow-up and expectant management of the patient was successful. our experience regarding this complication is presented.
Transcatheter occlusion of Blalock-Taussig shunts was successfully performed in three children with the Rashkind double umbrella occluding device. Complete occlusion was confirmed angiographically in two patients and echocardiographically in the third. The delivery system was adapted for use through smaller sheaths making it more suitable for small children or arterial access.
A left-sided interposition graft (modified Blalock-Taussig anastomosis) was constructed with polytetrafluoroethylene in a three month old child with tetralogy of Fallot. This shunt thrombosed and a replacement shunt became the site of chronic Pseudomonas infection. The second anastomosis was excised and a third interposition graft was inserted on the right side because the anatomy was unsuitabl...
OBJECTIVE The modified Blalock-Taussig shunt is the most commonly used palliative procedure for infants with ductal-dependent pulmonary circulation. Recently, catheter-based stenting of the ductus arteriosus has been used by some centers to avoid surgical shunt placement. We evaluated the durability and safety of ductal stenting as an alternative to the modified Blalock-Taussig shunt. METHODS...
Systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunts using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) (modified Blalock-Taussig shunt) are being used successfully in palliation of cyanotic congenital heart diseases. Graft thrombosis is by far the most common complication of the procedure. Persistant serum leakage through PTFE graft causing perigraft seroma is a rare but devastating complication resulting in increased durat...
We report an 18-month-old boy with the association of pectus excavatum and tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). We successfully performed simultaneous pectus repair using sternal elevation without any prosthetic support and total correction of TOF after a prior modified Blalock-Taussig shunt. Retracting a divided costo-sternal complex with a rectus abdominal flap away from the operative field before the ...
A nine month old infant with life threatening tracheal compression due to a Blalock-Taussig shunt aneurysm is described. Successful surgical management is discussed.
