OBJECTIVES In the current classification of epilepsies two forms of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) were included: mesial and lateral (neocortical) TLE. We aimed at identifying prognostic factors for the surgical outcome of lesional neocortical TLE. METHODS We included consecutive patients who had undergone presurgical evaluation including ictal video-EEG and high-resolution MRI, who had TLE due...
We describe a patient in whom the only electrographic manifestation of a complex partial seizure recorded by video-EEG telemetry was periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges (PLEDs) with a left anterior temporal emphasis. The abnormality, which persisted throughout the whole recorded seizure, lends support to the claim that PLEDs can be an ictal phenomenon.
PURPOSE Midline epileptiform discharges are rare compared with discharges at other scalp locations. Neuroimaging results and semiologic seizure characteristics of patients with midline spikes are not adequately described. The aim of this study was to describe the neuroimaging findings and detailed seizure semiologies in patients with midline spikes. METHODS We reviewed the EEG database of the...
The purpose of this study was to compare 2-[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), hippocampal volumetry (HV), T2 relaxometry, and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (1H-MRSI) in the presurgical neuroimaging lateralization of patients with nonlesional, electroencephalogram (EEG)-defined unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Twenty-five patients were...
A 59-year-old man with no history of seizure, who was undergoing treatment for chronic alcoholic cirrhosis, was admitted for a fever due to cellulitis and alcohol withdrawal. A generalized seizure with left facial twitching developed after the patient lost consciousness during status epilepticus (SE). Electroencephalogram showed periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges (PLEDs) over the righ...
Objective. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder often associated with intractable epilepsy, and surgical resection the effective therapeutic approach to alleviate seizures in TSC patients. Scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) noninvasive method used diagnose epilepsy; however, relationship between scalp video-EEG findings postsurgical seizure outcomes has not been ...
OBJECTIVE To determine the EEG findings associated with acute post coronary artery bypass graft encephalopathy (aPCE), and to study the demographics and neuroimaging findings. METHODS We reviewed the EEG in all patients with the diagnosis of PCE between February 2006 and December 2011. RESULTS We identified 21 (20 males, and one female) patients with aPCE. The mean age (+/-SD) was 64 (+/-11...
Surgical treatment of epilepsy is a challenge for patients with non-contributive brain magnetic resonance imaging. However, surgery is feasible if the seizure-onset zone is precisely delineated through intracranial electroencephalography recording. We recently described a method, volumetric imaging of epileptic spikes, to delineate the spiking volume of patients with focal epilepsy using magnet...
