mechanoreceptors of foot sole likely contribute in the reflex regulations. stimulation of these receptors in the lateral aspect of the foot is corresponded to the lateral plantar division of the tibial nerve. therefore, it was hypothesized that repetitive low threshold afferents stimulation would have an inhibitory effect on the soleus h-reflexes. methods: sixteen normal subjects voluntarily pa...
A 41 year old man presented with pain and numbness affecting the lateral aspect of his foot after a steroid injection for plantar fasciitis. Examination confirmed numbness and motor impairment of the lateral plantar nerve. The findings were confirmed by electromyographic studies. The anatomy of the lateral plantar nerve and correct technique for injection to treat plantar fasciitis are discussed.
PURPOSE To compare the outcome following lateral plantar nerve release with or without calcaneal drilling for resistant plantar fasciitis. METHODS 30 women and 3 men aged 30 to 60 (mean, 45) years with resistant plantar fasciitis were randomised to undergo release of the first branch of the lateral plantar nerve with (group 1, n=18) or without (group 2, n=15) calcaneal drilling. RESULTS Pat...
1. Certain muscles in the hind foot of rats were partially paralysed by applying tetrodotoxin to part of their motor innervation. In these muscles motor nerve sprouting occurred from the terminals of the unblocked axons. The extent of sprouting was compared with that seen in totally paralysed and in partially denervated muscles. 2. Action potentials were blocked in the medial and lateral planta...
Although posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) has been shown in both clinical and animal studies to elicit bladder-inhibitory reflexes, our understanding of the role of posterior tibial nerve (PTN) afferents that elicit these responses is significantly limited. To this end, we investigated the effects of frequency-dependant PTNS in urethane-anesthetized rats undergoing repeated urodynamic ...
Flexor digitorum brevis is an intrinsic muscle of the sole of the foot that lies immediately superior to the central part of the plantar aponeurosis and inferior to the tendons of flexor digitorum longus. Its flat spindle shaped muscle belly arises as a thin tendon from the medial process of tuber calcanei, proximal part of plantar aponeurosis, intermuscular septa and other adjacent fascial lay...
TARSAL tunnel syndrome is the pedal equivalent of carpal tunnel syndrome. The common aetiology of a tunnel syndrome is the compression of a nerve as it passes through an inextensible compartment. The nerve involved is the posterior tribial as it passes deep to the flexor rectinaculum, postero-inferior to the medial malleolus. The nerve divides to form the medial plantar, lateral plantar and cal...
OBJECTIVE To demonstrate the bifurcation pattern of the tibial nerve and its branches. METHODS Eleven legs of seven fresh cadavers were dissected. The reference line for the bifurcation point of tibial nerve branches was an imaginary horizontal line passing the tip of the medial malleolus. The distances between the reference line and the bifurcation points were measured. The bifurcation branc...
