The first outbreak of dlsease due to an atyplcal Aeromonas salmonicida among turbot Scophthalmus maximus (L . ) in Denmark is reported. The causal organism was oxidase-negative, non-pigmented, and slow-growing. Additionally it differed from the typical strains in a number of biochemical characters. The mortality among turbot in the farm was high but was responsive to antlmlcrobial therapy.

Distribution Th e turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, also called Psetta maxima (Scophthalmidae, Pleuronectiformes), is naturally distributed in European waters, from Northeast Atlantic to the Arctic Circle (30o to 70oN; 23oW42oE). It occurs in the Baltic and in the Mediterranean, as well as in the Black Sea, where a subspecies Psetta maxima maeotica has been described (1). It also exists in the Sout...
Ranaviruses have been isolated from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) in Denmark. Phylogenomic analyses revealed that these two ranaviruses are nearly identical and form a distinct clade at the base of the ranavirus tree branching off near other fish ranaviruses.
The development of feeding hierarchies was investigated in juvenile turbot, Scophthalmus Ž . maximus Rafinesque held at two rearing densities for 82 days. Individual biometrics were measured on five occasions and a diet labelled with ballotini glass beads was used in combination with a noninvasive radiographic technique to estimate consumption rates. The results demonstrate that the inclusion o...
Experimental infections with a birnavims strain isolated from turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) were conducted by immersion and intraperitoneal injection in turbot. Virus could be recovered in skin, mucus and intestine from fish infected by immersion, only up to 3 days post-infection. The distribution in internal organs was fast after intraperitoneal injection and virus was recovered with high titr...
The pathogenicity of different birnavirus strains to turbot was determined by challenge experiments. The reference strains of IPNV (Sp, Ab and VR-299) were not pathogenic for turbot (Scophthalmus maximus). The Norwegian serotype (N1) and two selected birnavirus strains isolated from turbot and related to the Ab serotype of IPNV (TB-306 and TB-390) were virulent to different degrees for turbot a...
Chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) belongs to the large superfamily of G protein-coupled receptors. The EST sequence of CXCR4 from turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) was obtained from a subtractive cDNA library. In the present study, the full-length cDNA sequence of turbot CXCR4 was obtained, and sequence analysis indicated that its primary structure was highly similar to CXCR4 from other vertebrates. ...
Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisae) β-1,3 glucans were used as adjuvant in a Vibrio damsela vaccine for turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.). Turbot were injected with the adjuvant prior, at the same time and after the vaccine. Several immune parameters (index and rate of phagocytosis, passive haemolytic plaque numbers, and agglutinating antibody titers) were determined at different times postinoculati...
