The number of bound states of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation is analyzed in terms of the number of bound states corresponding to ‘‘fragments’’ of the potential. When the potential is integrable and has a finite first moment, the sharp inequalities 12p1( j51 p N j<N<( j51 p N j are proved, where p is the number of fragments, N is the total number of bound states, and N j is the number ...

We observed bound levels of the I8 state in H2 and D2 , confined in the outer well of the lowest Pg adiabatic potential close to its (1s12p) dissociation limit, with an equilibrium internuclear distance of '8 a.u. Rovibronic levels (v50 – 2, J51 – 5 for H2 and v50 – 5, J51 – 6 for D2) are populated with pulsed lasers in resonance enhanced XUV1IR ~extreme ultraviolet1infrared! excitation, and pr...

We examine how labor immigration affects public pensions under centralized wage setting. We show that immigration improves the sustainability of pay-as-you-go pensions if and only if total employment declines. This occurs if the labor demand elasticity exceeds the unemployment rate. If unions appropriate quasi-rents from relation-specific capital, observed factor prices no longer reflect effective costs. Unionism has effects akin to a partial factor tax on capital. Demand curve settlements need not imply higher K/L among union firms. JEL code: J51 (Trade Unions: Objectives, Structure, and Effects) *Helpful suggestions were received from John Chilton, Eric Maskin, and Joe S...

In this paper we propose straightforward extensions of multi-union, monopolistic competition models appearing in the recent literature on the macroeconomic effects of monetary policy. We extend these models from the Stackelberg equilibrium to the Nash equilibrium under variations in labor market regime in order to evaluate propositions about non-neutrality of monetary policy. The paper develops an overlapping generations model that highlights interactions between social security, unemployment and growth. The social security system has two components: old age pensions and unemployment insurance. Pensions have a direct effect on economic growth. Both pensions and unemployment benefits influence equilibrium unemployment caused by wage bargaining. Since unemployment impa...

We show that two Raman generators which have different Raman transition frequencies and are used in series result in a multiplicative increase in the total number of generated sidebands. When phase-corrected, these sidebands synthesize to a train of randomly timed single-cycle pulses. For series generators on the rotational transitions of molecular D2 (J50→2) and H2 (J51→3), each with 40 modes,...

Using data from the Workplace Employment Relations Survey 1998, this paper shows that unionisation increased the probability of within-workplace job cuts and the incidence of job security guarantees. As theory predicts, both are more prevalent among market-sector workplaces with higher union density and multi-unionism. Expectations that these effects would be more muted in the public sector wer...
