background: our study aimed at substantiating the recent claim of myo-cardial complications in severe malaria by experimentally inducing severe plasmodium falciparum infection in a humanized mouse model employed as human surrogate. methods: twenty five humanized mice were inoculated with standard in vitro cultured p. falciparum and blood extracts collected from the inner cardiac muscles of infe...

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of oral administration of fenbendazole (20 mg/kg body weight) prior to and after experimental infection of immunosuppressed rabbits with Encephalitozoon cuniculi. A total of thirty rabbits were divided into five groups: NN (non-immunosuppressed; non-infected), IN (immunosuppressed; non-infected), IPI (immunosuppressed; protected-infected), ITI (...

respiratory syncytial virus infection in immunocompromised patients, especially those with defects in cell mediated immunity is associated with high morbidity and mortality. lymphocytopenia is an important factor associated with progression of upper to lower respiratory tract infection. the only licensed antiviral treatment for rsv available currently is ribavirin, although additional immunomod...

introduction rabies is a fatal disease and has a threatening risk for the public health. immunosuppression is related to a wide variety of diseases. it is recommended that immunosuppressed patients receive the full post-exposure vaccination, concerning that the immune response may be inadequate. the aim of this study is to determine the level of rabies neutralizing antibody in immunosuppressed ...

OBJECTIVE Microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi has been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in immunosuppressed individuals, such as AIDS patients. The objective of the study was to develop pharmacologically immunosuppressed animals as a model of the natural occurring E. cuniculi infection. METHODS Distinct groups of adult Balb-C mice were immunosuppressed with different doses of dexam...

In the first study, we tested the ability of a commercial feed additive (OmniGen-AF) to affect markers of innate immunity in immunosuppressed sheep and the ability of a pathogen challenge (mould) to affect the immune response to the additive. Treatments consisted of (1) control, (2) immunosuppressed with dexamethasone (DEX), (3) immunosuppressed plus the feed additive, (4) immunosuppressed plus...

An immunologically immunosuppressed mouse model of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia using antibody developed by Dialynas et al. (Immunol. Rev. 74:29-55, 1983) directed to L3T4+ T cells (referred to as L3T4+ antibody) was compared with a corticosteroid-immunosuppressed mouse model. Corticosteroid- or L3T4+ antibody-immunosuppressed BALB/c mice transtracheally inoculated with P. carinii developed s...

Human brain cells were examined for the presence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) DNA sequences by in situ hybridisation. Viral genome was detected in immunosuppressed patients with virological evidence of past HSV infection but not in immunosuppressed patients with no such evidence. In patients who had not been immunosuppressed, no HSV DNA sequences were detectable.

Immunosuppressed patients have a nine-fold greater risk of developing active tuberculosis (TB) disease given the latent TB infection than the general population. Few data are available on the predictivity of T-SPOT.TB in immunosuppressed patients. We had a T-SPOT.TB determination and a TST from 197 immunosuppressed haematological patients and 324 community contacts of infectious TB cases. In th...

To develop a model for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) pathogenesis in immunosuppressed hosts, we studied experimental infections of immunocompetent versus SHIV 89.6P-infected, immunosuppressed rhesus macaques with the EBV-related rhesus lymphocryptovirus (LCV). Primary LCV infection after oral inoculation of 4 immunocompetent animals was characterized by an acute viremia and seroconversion followed b...
