conclusions infection with hmpv and rsv are most frequent infections among pediatric patients with respiratory tract symptoms. coinfection with these viruses may exacerbate the clinical symptoms and increase hospitalization rates, especially in children younger than one year old. results the hmpv and rsv were detected in 44 (15.7%) and 84 (30.0%) samples, respectively. coinfection with both vir...
results among the 158 children evaluated in this study, 49 individuals (31.1%) had rsv infection while nine individuals (5.7%) had hmpv infection. five (55.5%) of the hmpv-infected children were male while four (44.5%) were female and 27 (55.2%) of the rsv-infected patients were females and 22 (44.8%) were males. the rsv infections were detected in mainly < one year old children and hmpv infect...
Human metapneumovirus is known to be similar to respiratory syncytial virus. Because of an incomplete protective immune response to new genotypes, re-infection occurs frequently, especially in the elderly. However, the clinical manifestations of human metapneumovirus need to be further characterized in adults. A 73-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with acute dyspnea, chest discomf...
The discovery of human metapneumovirus and its implications for respiratory tract disease have emphasized the need for a sensitive, specific, and rapid assay to detect this virus in a clinical setting. It recently became clear that human metapneumovirus can be grouped into at least four genetic lineages. Previously described assays for the detection of human metapneumovirus were developed by us...
Here, we present the complete genome sequence of a human metapneumovirus isolate collected from a hospitalized infant suffering from acute respiratory disease. This is the first complete genome sequence of human metapneumovirus originating from Brazil.
OBJECTIVE To report, to our knowledge, the first case of detection of human metapneumovirus in the cerebrospinal fluid of a patient during acute encephalitis. DESIGN Case report. SETTING University hospital. PATIENT A 10-year-old girl with acute encephalitis. RESULTS Human metapneumovirus was detected in cerebrospinal fluid and nasal-wash specimens during the initial phase of mild encep...
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a paramyxovirus identified in 2001, is a leading cause of respiratory tract infections in both children and adults. Seroprevalence studies demonstrate that the primary infection occurs before the age of 5 years, and humans are reinfected throughout life. The four subgroups of HMPV occur with year-to-year variability, and infection with one subgroup confers some ser...
In a pediatric surveillance network, 287 (5.1%) of 5,580 specimens from patients with acute respiratory infections tested positive for human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Phylogenetic analysis of N- and F-gene sequences of identified HMPV showed that 30% belonged to a novel phylogenetic cluster.
