The mechanism for efficient and coherent angular momentum transport remains one of the unsolved puzzles in astrophysics despite the enormous efforts that have been made. We suggest that important new insight could be gained in this problem through an experimental and theoretical study of a laboratory device (Ranque-Hilsch tube) that displays a similar enhanced angular momentum transfer which ca...

a brass vortex tube (vt) with interchangeable parts is used to determine the optimum cold end orifice diameter, main tube length and diameter. experiments were carried out to study the effects of operating pressure as well. it is shown that there is an optimum value for cold end orifice diameter, which is equal to 4mm and there is an optimum value for cold and hot exit temperature difference at...

The Ranque–Hilsch vortex tube splits a single high pressure stream of gas into cold and warm streams. Simple models for the vortex tube combined with regenerative precooling are given from which an optimization can be undertaken. Two such optimizations are needed: the first shows that at any given cut or fraction of the cold stream, the best refrigerative load, allowing for the temperature lift...

A theory was developed that explains energy separation in a vortex tube, known as one of the Maxwellian demons. It appears that there is a unique relation between the pressures in the exits of the vortex tube and its temperatures. Experimental results show that the computed and measured temperatures are in very good agreement.
