Echinococcal disease can develop anywhere in the human body. The liver represents its most frequent location. Hepatic hydatid cysts may rupture into the biliary tract, thorax, peritoneum, viscera, digestive tract or skin. We report a rare case with rupture of the right hepatic duct into a hydatid cyst in a woman with known hydatid disease and choledocholithiasis. The increased intra-luminal pre...

Introduction: Hepatic hydatid cyst is caused by echinococcosis granulosis. It is a major health problem in endemic areas. The modern treatment of hydatid cysts of the liver varies from surgical intervention to percutaneous drainage or medical therapy. A high rate of complications following percutaneous drainage, and ineffectiveness of medical therapy have shown not to be the definitive treatmen...

Five patients with hepatic (3), pelvic (1) or spinal (1) hydatid cysts received 10 mg/kg/d albendazole for 1-3 months prior to surgery. Daughter cysts were present in the spinal hydatid and in one patient with hepatic disease. Electron microscope examination of the cyst tissue of the pelvic and the 2 hepatic cysts lacking daughter cysts showed no evidence of germinal layer, and the protoscolece...

Hydatid cyst liver rupture into the biliary tree may involve the common hepatic duct, lobar biliary branches, the small intrahepatic bile ducts or rarely the gallbladder. Rupture can be occult or frank. A frank intrabiliary rupture of hepatic hydatid cyst is a rare but serious event. The authors are reporting a case of concomitant rupture of hydatid cyst of liver into right hepatic duct and the...

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus (larval form) in humans with lesions most frequently encountered in the liver and lungs. It can rarely involve extra-hepatic organs. It is endemic in some regions of Iran. The omental hydatid cyst is a very rare manifestation of the disease. Echinococcus granulosus is considered the major cause of human hydatid cysts. Usually the duration of cyst formation is 10-20 years. This period shortens significantly upon rupture of a primary cyst. The literature describes low incidence of primary involvement of ovary as a site of hydatid cyst formation. Our case is the first report on ovarian hydatid cyst in Iran. A 60-year-old woman was pre...

Although it is frequent to see hydatid cyst patients in endemic areas, intrabiliary rupture of hydatid cyst in children is rare. Intrabiliary rupture was first reported in 1928 by Dew (1). Intrabiliary rupture is a serious complication of hepatic hydatid cyst. The incidence varies from 1% to 25% in adult patients (2). Rupture of the hydatid cyst into the bile ducts is a rare condition in childr...
