Hepatitis B virus (HBV) e (HBe) antigen is a nonstructural virus component with great immune regulation roles. It regulates adaptive immunity response and participates in persistent infection development. However, its roles on monocytes and B lymphocytes were rarely studied. Herein, we studied HBe roles on U937 and Hmy2.CIR by creating HBe stably transfected cells using lentivirus. We detected ...

Forskolin, UTP, 1-ethyl-2-benzimidazolinone (1-EBIO), NS004, 8-methoxypsoralen (Methoxsalen; 8-MOP), and genistein were evaluated for their effects on ion transport across primary cultures of human bronchial epithelium (HBE) expressing wild-type (wt HBE) and DeltaF508 (DeltaF-HBE) cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. In wt HBE, the baseline short-circuit current (I(sc)) averaged...

Hemoglobin E (HbE; alpha2beta226glu-lys), globally the commonest hemoglobin variant, is synthesized at a slightly reduced rate and has a homozygous phenotype similar to heterozygous beta thalassemia. Yet, when it is inherited together with a beta thalassemia allele, the resulting condition, HbE/beta thalassemia, is sometimes characterized by a severe, transfusion-dependent thalassemia major. Th...

A boy was born to a mother who was a chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier. She was hepatitis Be (HBe) antibody positive and HBe antigen and HBV-DNA negative. The boy had not received hepatitis B vaccine and died from fulminant hepatitis at 3 months of age. This case demonstrates the need to vaccinate babies of HBe antibody positive, HBe antigen negative carriers.

Serum samples from a total of 72 chronic hepatitis B virus carriers were analysed by serological, biochemical and molecular assays. The aim was to evaluate the relationship of the serological and biochemical parameters with molecular markers in order to assess the infectivity of virus. Out of 72 chronic HBsAg positive carriers, 28 patients were HBeAg positive and anti-HBe negative, 38 patients ...

Hemoglobin E (HbE) is one of the most common hemoglobin variants caused by a mutation in the β-globin gene, and found at high frequencies in various Southeast Asian groups. We surveyed HbE prevalence among 8 ethnic groups residing in 5 villages selected for their high period malaria endemicity, and 5 for low endemicity in northern Thailand, in order to uncover factors which may affect genetic p...

A retrospective study was carried out to determine the frequency of the pre-core stop codon mutant virus in a group of chronic hepatitis B carriers: 81 cases were considered [33 hepatits B e antigen (HBe) positive and 48 HBe negative]. All of the HBe positive cases had detectable viral DNA by hybridization analysis; in the case of the HBe negative cases, one third had detectable viral DNA by hy...

BACKGROUND Hemoglobin E is an important hemoglobin variant with a worldwide distribution. A number of hemoglobinopathies have been reported from Pakistan. However a comprehensive description of hemoglobin E syndromes for the country was never made. This study aimed to describe various hemoglobin E disorders based on hematological parameters and chromatography. The sub-aim was to characterize he...

When adding peroxide (H2O2), β subunits of hemoglobin (Hb) bear the burden of oxidative changes due in part to the direct oxidation of its Cys93. The presence of unpaired α subunits within red cells and/or co-inheritance of another β subunit mutant, HbE (β26 Glu→Lys) have been implicated in the pathogenesis and severity of β thalassemia. We have found that although both HbA and HbE autoxidize a...

Hemoglobin E (HbE) is one of the most prevalent beta-globin variant, which is widely distributed in Southeast Asia especially in Thailand. Homozygosity for this variant is common and may occur with iron deficiency. In order to study clinical and hematological phenotypes without the confounding effect of iron deficiency, investigations were carried out before and after iron supplementation for 2...
