Dehaloperoxidase hemoglobin A (DHP A) is a multifunctional hemoglobin that appears to have evolved oxidative pathways for the degradation of xenobiotics as a protective function that complements the oxygen transport function. DHP A possesses at least two internal binding sites, one for substrates and one for inhibitors, which include various halogenated phenols and indoles. Herein, we report th...
We prove the no-go theorem that the gravivector (h5μ) and graviscalar (h55) cannot have the massless modes on the RS brane. We analyze this model with the de Donder gauge (5D transverse-tracefree gauge). It turns out that h55 does not have any bulk (massive) and brane (massless) propagations. On the other hand, although h5μ has a kind of massive propagation, it does not have any massless propag...
A halophilic actinomycete strain, designated H55(T), was isolated from Saharan soil sampled in the Mzab region (Ghardaïa, southern Algeria) and was characterized in a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. The cell wall was determined to contain meso-diaminopimelic acid and the characteristic whole-cell sugars were arabinose and galactose. The predominant menaquinones were found to be MK-...
The effect of bactericidal UV-C treatments (254 nm) on Escherichia coli O157:H7 suspended in apple juice increased synergistically with temperature up to a threshold value. The optimum UV-C treatment temperature was 55 °C, yielding a 58.9% synergistic lethal effect. Under these treatment conditions, the UV-heat (UV-H55 °C) lethal variability achieving 5-log reductions had a logistic distributio...
This paper proposes that the decline in federal disability insurance (DI) screening stringency raises the incentive of being uninsured. To support it, we provide a theoretical model and empirical evidence. JEL classification: I13, I18, H31, H51, H55
We examine how labor immigration affects public pensions under centralized wage setting. We show that immigration improves the sustainability of pay-as-you-go pensions if and only if total employment declines. This occurs if the labor demand elasticity exceeds the unemployment rate. JEL-Classification: F22, H55, J51
The paper evaluates the theoretical literature on public pension schemes. First, the terms pay-as-you-go and capital reserve are made precise. These two systems are then compared, followed by a consideration of their efficiency properties. Thereafter conversion policies are discussed. JEL-Classification: H21, H55
The Old-Age Security Motive for Fertility: Evidence from the Extension of Social Pensions in Namibia
The old-age security motive for fertility postulates that people’s needs support raise the demand children. We exploit extension of social pensions in Namibia during 1990s to provide a quasi-experimental quantification this widespread idea. reform eliminated inequalities pension coverage and benefits across regions ethnic groups. Combining differences pre-reform exposure cohorts, we show substa...
This study identifies the causal effect of pension generosity on women’s fertility behavior. It capitalizes Brazil’s expansion system to rural workers, whose wealth subsequently more than tripled. Difference-in-difference, instrumental variable, and event methods show that reform reduces propensity childbearing women fertile age by 8 percent in short run. Completed declines 1.3 children within ...
This paper examines retirement behaviour and household income for older persons in Chile. It pays close attention to the sources of household income, income inequalities, and the economic vulnerability of older persons. This is important in order to evaluate whether labour market and social security reform in Latin America will improve the welfare of older groups, and especially their vulnerabi...
