Giant omphalocele is difficult to manage and is associated with a poor outcome. A male newborn presented to our hospital with a giant omphalocele. We performed a staged closure of giant omphalocele using synthetic mesh to construct a silo and then mesh abdominoplasty in the neonatal period that led to a successful outcome within a reasonable period of hospital stay.
staged repair of giant recurrent omphalocele and gastroschesis “camel-litter method”-a new technique
the aim of this article is to present a new technique of giant omphaloceles repair in neonatal period and also later in life in patients that the primary repair has been failed. from 1999 to 2006, seven consecutive children (male/female ratio 0.4) with giant omphalocele (n=6) and gastroschesis (n=2) were underwent this new operation in our center. in this technique, there were two operations. t...
introduction : although many techniques have been described for reconstruction of the giant omphalocele, we present a simple , effective and safe new technique. materials and methods: we have studied 11 neonates with giant omphalocele that were treated by a new technique, umbrella repair, in sarvar pediatric hospital of mashhad, iran. in this new technique we released the skin around the omphal...
Closure of a giant omphalocele can be challenging. Preservation of the amnion in staged closure is not commonly practiced. Here, we describe 2 cases of giant omphalocele treated with a modified amnion preservation, staged closure technique. This paper demonstrates the feasibility and safety of this technique, and the versatility of amnion to adapt to an escharization strategy if closure is not ...
The management of giant omphaloceles at our department is primarily conservative. However, management can be challenging if the omphalocele is ruptured or the sac has to be removed. We report a case in which a giant omphalocele in a newborn female patient was managed by covering the abdominal defect with non-cross-linked intact porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix (Strattice reconstructive t...
Omphalocele is a congenital defect in the abdominal wall, usually treated at birth or within 1-2 years of life depending on condition of patient and size and contents of the defect. We repaired a giant omphalocele without mesh in a 9-year-old girl. She developed duodenal obstruction in the postoperative period requiring another laparotomy and duodeno-jejunostomy to bypass obstruction.
Material and Methods: It was a 15 years conservative treatment retrospective study of giant omphalocele with 2% disodium eosin aqueous. The technique consisted of the twice a day application of 2% eosin on the omphalocele bag (sterile solution for cutaneous application). The technique was taught to the mother to continue with the outpatient care. We studied the duration of hospitalization, the ...
BACKGROUND Splenic torsion is rare and as a result the appropriate management is unclear. While there has been a shift towards splenectomy and laparoscopic splenopexy, we present a successful case of non-operative management of splenic torsion in a patient with a history of a giant omphalocele. CASE PRESENTATION A 3 year-old female presented with a three-day history of abdominal pain, fever a...
