In the past two decades, Fusarium species have been increasingly recognized as serious pathogens in immunocompromised patients. The outcome of fusariosis in the context of severe persistent neutropaenia has been almost universally fatal. The treatment of fusariosis in immunocompromised patients remains a challenge and the prognosis of systemic fusariosis in this population remains poor. This re...

Cross-reactivity of Fusarium species with serum galactomannan antigen (GMI) test has been observed. We sought to evaluate if GMI could help to early diagnose invasive fusariosis and to monitor treatment response. We reviewed the records of all patients with invasive fusariosis between 2008 and 2012 in three Brazilian hospitals. We selected patients who had at least 1 GMI test within 2 days befo...

BACKGROUND Conventional amphotericin B-based antifungal therapy for invasive fusariosis in patients with a hematologic malignancy results in a > or = 70% failure rate. Posaconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent with in vitro and in vivo activity against Fusarium species. METHODS In this retrospective analysis of patients from 3 open-label clinical trials, we evaluated posaconazole for ...

Fusarium species is a ubiquitous fungus that causes opportunistic infections. We present 26 cases of invasive fusariosis categorized according to the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group (EORTC/MSG) criteria of fungal infections. All cases (20 proven and 6 probable) were treated from January 2000 until January 2010. We also review 97 cases reported sinc...

Fusariosis is a hyalohyphomycosis due to Fusarium species that mainly occurs in immunocompromised hosts. The clinical spectrum of Fusarium infection comprises localized and disseminated forms. A case of localized cutaneous fusariosis caused by Fusarium solani in a renal transplant patient is described, and the skin manifestations of the disease are discussed.

The soil-borne plant pathogen Fusarium oxysporum causes life-threatening invasive fusariosis in immunocompromised individuals. The mechanism of infection in mammalian hosts is largely unknown. In the present study we show that the symptoms of disseminated fusariosis caused by F. oxysporum in immunosuppressed mice are remarkably similar to those reported in humans. Distinct fungal structures wer...

Posaconazole is widely used for prophylaxis against invasive fungal infections in patients undergoing myeloablative therapy. Disseminated fusariosis is a serious invasive mold infection in such patients. Preclinical and clinical studies indicate activity of posaconazole against Fusarium. We describe two cases of disseminated fusariosis that occurred despite posaconazole prophylaxis.

Background.  Invasive fusariosis remains an aggressive, albeit infrequent infection in immunocompromised patients. Methods.  We identified all cases of invasive fusariosis between January 2002 and December 2014. We recorded patient characteristics including clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes at 6 and 12 weeks after diagnosis, as well as species identification and antifungal drug sus...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Fusariosis is a fungal infection often involving the skin. Various species can cause local, focally invasive, or disseminated infections. The routes of entry for Fusarium species include the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, toe nails, trauma to the skin, and indwelling central venous catheter. CASE REPORT Herein, we present the case of a 35-year-old woman pres...
