the effects of dietary nucleotide (nt) on growth performance and some haematological parameters of striped catfish (pangasianodon hypophthalmus) were investigated. different levels of the nt (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1%) in the diet were used for 10 weeks starting on the fish weighted (1.52 ± 0.11 g). the results showed that nt supplementations did not improve final weight, weight gain, food conserv...

Gelatins from the skin of four different species of fresh water fish, namely pangas catfish (Pangasius pangasius), Asian redtail catfish (Hemibagrus nemurus), striped snakehead (Channa Striata), and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) have been successfully extracted by citric acid. The gelatin from pangas catfish was found to possessed the highest rheology properties compared to the others. I...

Channel catfish and sunshine bass were exposed to a low-water stress event and allowed to recover in fresh water or a solution of metomidate (dl-1-(1-phenylethyl)-5-(metoxycarbonyl) imidazole hydrochloride), which inhibits the synthesis of cortisol. Change in time of plasma cortisol was used as an index of cortisol secretion and clearance. Plasma cortisol and glucose increased during the exposu...

Flavobacterium columnare causes columnaris disease in fresh and brackish water worldwide. F. columnare strain 94-081 was isolated from a diseased channel catfish in 1994; its genome sequence is the first completed genomovar II sequence.

We report the development of a sensitive, and specific, competitive, antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the measurement of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) growth hormone (cfGH). The detection limit of the assay (90% binding) was 2.0ng/ml and the ED(50) value (standard curve range 150-0.59 ng/ml) was 67.3 ng/ml. Recovery of cfGH-spiked plasma samples was determined to be...

Fishes of the Loricariidae family, known as "cascudos", constitute an endemic group in Neotropical freshwaters. In this study, were cytogenetically examined two species of Loricariidae (Pterygoplichthysanisitsi Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903 and Farlowellaamazonum (Günther, 1864) belonging to Hypostominae and Loricariinae subfamilies respectively) from Iguatemi River. Our study provide the first des...

Present study reveals the effects of microcystin-LR (2.5 μg/25g bw) toxins on certain biochemical parameters in blood of H. fossilis. In treated fish serum bilirubin, serum cholesterol, serum creatinine and serum urea levels are increased. Serum protein content of treated fish is decreased. Present study suggests that MCLR is toxic to fresh water catfish Heteropneustes fossilis.

The emergences of insecticide resistance in Anopheles and drug resistance in plasmodium have become a matter of great concern for malaria control in Africa South of Sahara. So many solutions have been applied except any electromagnetic challenge. Electromagnetic field can be fatal for all living being. In larval stage Anopheles are very vulnerable. We learn from Malapterurus electricus catfish ...

Freshwater fish evolution has been shaped by changes in the earth's surface involving changes in the courses of rivers and fluctuations in sea level. The main objective of this study is to improve our knowledge of the evolution of loricariids, a numerous and adaptive group of freshwater catfish species, and the role of geological changes in their evolution. We use a number of different phylogen...

Bacteriophage Listex P100 (phage P100) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service for Listeria monocytogenes control on both raw and ready-to-eat food products. In this article, we present the proof of concept on the influence of phage dose, phage contact time, and storage temperature on the listericidal activity...
