dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (dbsa) was used as an efficient, cheap and stable brønsted catalyst for acetylation of alcohols and phenols and formylation of alcohols under solvent-free conditions. various primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols were acetylated with acetic anhydride as an acetylating agent under solvent-free conditions in the presence of catalytic amount of dbsa at room temperatu...

Post-translational modification of histones and other chromosomal proteins regulates chromatin conformation and gene activity. Methylation and acetylation of lysyl residues are among the most frequently described modifications in these proteins. Whereas these modifications have been studied in detail, very little is known about a recently discovered chemical modification, the N(epsilon)-lysine ...

A rapid and chemoselective method for the N-formylation of structurally diverse anilines with formic acid using nanoalumina sulfonic acid (NASA) at 70oC under solvent-free condition has been developed. The catalyst was found to be compatible with different functional groups and the formylation proceeded smoothly with anilines bearing electron withdrawing as well as electron donating substituents.

Formylation of initiator methionyl-tRNA is essential for normal growth of eubacteria. However, under special conditions, it has been possible to initiate protein synthesis with unformylated initiator tRNA even in eubacteria. Earlier studies suggested that the lack of ribothymidine (rT) modification in initiator tRNA may facilitate initiation in the absence of formylation. In this report we show...

The specific formylation of initiator methionyl-tRNA by methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase (MTF; EC 2.1.2.9) is important for the initiation of protein synthesis in eubacteria and in eukaryotic organelles. The determinants for formylation in the tRNA are clustered mostly in the acceptor stem. As part of studies on the molecular mechanism of recognition of the initiator tRNA by MTF, we report here...

DFT computations have been performed to gain insight into the mechanisms of formylation/methylation of amines (e.g. methylaniline (1a)/2,2,4,4-tetramethylpiperidine (2a)) with CO2 and hydrosilane ([Si]H2, [Si] 1⁄4 Ph2Si), catalyzed by 1,3,2-diazaphospholene ([NHP]H). Different from the generally proposed sequential mechanism for the methylation of amine with CO2, i.e. methylation proceeds via f...

The catalytic N-formylation and N-methylation of amines using CO2 as the carbon source represents a facile and sustainable approach for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and natural products. Herein, we describe highly effective and inexpensive thiazolium carbene-based catalysts derived from vitamin B1 for the N-formylation and N-methylation of amines, using polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as a r...

The metazoan mitochondrial translation machinery is unusual in having a single tRNA(Met) that fulfills the dual role of the initiator and elongator tRNA(Met). A portion of the Met-tRNA(Met) pool is formylated by mitochondrial methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase (MTFMT) to generate N-formylmethionine-tRNA(Met) (fMet-tRNA(met)), which is used for translation initiation; however, the requirement of f...

Primary and secondary alcohols were formylated selectively in the presence of phenols by stirring with chloral in acetone over anhydrous K2CO3 at ambient temperatures in high yields. O-Formylation could be the method of choice for protecting an alcoholic group in a complex synthetic sequence because deformylation can be effected selectively in the presence of acetate or other ester protecting g...
